Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
This third entry in the series finds 16-year-old Jessica dragged into solving a mystery in her small town. One cheerleader has been murdered, another brutally attacked. The authorities are at a loss, but Jessica has ESP—a very specific kind that allows her to locate missing people. She doesn't like to use it because the ensuing publicity upsets her mentally ill brother; however, despite her insistence that her powers have disappeared, everyone from peers to lurking FBI agents knows that Jess can help. When a third teenage girl disappears, Jess overcomes her reluctance and plunges into action. The book ends with all immediate danger averted but with a pointer towards a future book where Jessica will again be pressured by the FBI to use her psychic powers. Peppered with television references, clothing brands, and an overuse of "like" and "you know," this book tries too hard to be teenage. Characterization is overshadowed by the forced vernacular style and by economically privileged assumptions within the narrative voice. Safe House will be most enjoyable to readers looking specifically for this genre of easy-to-read murder mystery with light romance. (1-800-Where-R-You, #3). School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Jessica Mastriani, 16, has been having psychic visions ever since she was struck by lightning, earning her the nickname Lightning Girl at school. When a cheerleader disappears and is found dead, Jessica reluctantly uses her psychic abilities to catch the culprits. This third addition to a series by the author (aka Meg Cabot) of The Princess Diaries (HarperCollins, 2000) will be popular with teen girls. The author accurately captures the voice of the narrator, a girl just beyond the boundaries of the popular crowd. The blend of romance and suspense adds to the appeal, as does the protagonist's take-charge attitude in solving the crime. With so many series out there, librarians may want to purchase one or two of the volumes to see how they will be received.-Michele Capozzella, Chappaqua Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Meet the Author

Meg Cabot
Meg Cabot

Meg Cabot is the author of the #1 New York Times best-sellers All-American Girl and The Princess Diaries series, two of which have been made into major motion pictures by Disney. Meg is also the author of The Mediator series, the Airhead series, and many books for adults. She currently divides her time between Key West and New York City with her husband and one-eyed cat, Henrietta.

Biography

Meg Cabot knows that one of the best cures for feeling gawky and conspicuous is reading about someone who sticks out even more than you do. Her books for young adults invariably feature girls who have extraordinary powers that carry extraordinary burdens. Cabot's Princess Diaries series offers up the secret thoughts of Mia Thermopolis, who discovers at age 14 that she is actually the princess of a small European country. This revelation adds significantly to her extant concerns about crushes, friendships, school, and other matters falling under adolescent scrutiny.

Cabot, a native of Indiana weaned on Judy Blume and Barbara Cartland, was already a successful romance novelist (as Patricia Cabot) before she began writing for young adults; her alter-alter ego, Jenny Carroll, began a new series shortly after The Princess Diaries debuted. The Carroll books are divided between the Mediator series, starring a girl who can communicate with restless ghosts; and the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU books, in which a girl struck by lightning acquires the ability to locate missing people.

Cabot writes her books in a conspiratorial, first-person style that resonates with her readers. She has obviously kept a grip on the vernacular and the key issues of adolescence; but what makes her books so irresistible is the mixing of the mundane with the fantastic. After all, who wouldn't like to wake up and be a princess all of a sudden, or a seer? Cabot takes such offhand notions and roots them firmly in the details of average, middle-class American life. She has also tiptoed into mystery and paranormal suspense with other YA novels and series installments.

Cabot continues to write adult novels under various permutations of her given name (Meggin Patricia Cabot): from 19th-century historical romances to contemporary chick lit. And, as with her books for teens, these romances have earned praise for their lighthearted humor and well drawn characters.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Cabot:

"I am left handed."

"I hate tomatoes of any kind."

"I really wanted to be veterinarian, but I got a 410 on my math SATs."

"Writing used to be my hobby, but now that it's my job, I have no hobby -- except watching TV and laying around the pool reading US Weekly. I have tried many hobbies, such as knitting, Pilates, ballet, yoga, and guitar, but none of them have taken. So I guess I'm stuck with no hobby.

This book was so fantastic with all of the adventures and stomach turning scariness. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves a great mystery that makes you think.

    Keeps you wanting more

In this third book of the series 1-800-Where-R-You, Jessica Mastriani finds herself in a bit of a pickle. Between the death of a cheerleader, who was from her own school, and trying to convince everyone that she no longer has her ESP powers (which enables her to locate missing people), she stumbles across another kidnaped cheerleader. She doesn¿t admit to still having her powers but right away she jumps into all of the action. She soon discovers that the police have no clue who the kidnappers were and that she is all alone in trying to solve this case. It all ends with a big twist and an unsuspecting kidnapper. I really like this book and how it was written. I thought it did a good job of connecting with teens and not being too serious. I liked the author's diction. It was not too advanced and it was not too simple, it was just right. She uses words like blurting, chick, disgust, and kissing to make the reader like and trust the narrator. I disliked the graphic detail when they found the second kidnap victim. It was just too graphic and gross for me. I think it could have been a little less gruesome. I would certainly recommend this book and this series to high school students but I think it would be too advanced for elementary and middle school students even though there is simple diction. Overall, it was a great book.

    A Great Novel

This is the first book I read in the 1-800-Where-R-You Series. Even without reading the first two, I was able to really enjoy this. Meg Cabot makes Jessica really likeable, and it is easily to understandable what she is going through. I could really feel the chemistry between Jessica and Rob, and wanted them to get together the entire time. The other characters were cool, too. At the end, I really like the way Meg Cabot build up the action. Sometimes it is really easy to see what's going to happen, but I was really eager to find out what would happen next and find the murderer.

ONE OF THE BEST BY CABOT...

Whether you hated or loved the Princess Diaries, you should give this series a try. Next to the Mediator books, I think these are the best ones Meg Cabot has ever written. They are exciting with a little bit of romance. They will have you glued to the seats. Plus there is a really, really hot guy in there.

    16 again

Love this series! Discovered it as an adult. Wish i' d found it sooner. Main character is awesome. Lots of teenage conflict and angst. Fun adventures and a quick read. Creative plot and well developed characters too. Makes you think twice about wanting to be psychic no matter how well intentioned you are.

    A MUST READ!!!

I read the 4th book first on an accedent then went back and read them in order, although the 4th is my favorite, i really recomend this one, it kept me reading i couldnt put it down from the first chapter it kept me reading, i swear there was more than one climax to it and when you wernt 1/2 way through it seemed like it was resolved untill you couldnt stop reading to find out what happened next. The whole Jess/Rob relationship is my favorite thing about the series and Jess's attitude. i love the entire series and recomend it to everyone as a MUST READ!

One of the best book series

Though I liked the second book more then the third, I still really enjoyed 'Safe House.' It was filled with a lot more mystery and suspense then the last two books. I can't wait until I read the last and final installment of the '1-800-Missing' series, 'Sanctuary.'
