Residential and commercial landscapes are loaded with male-only plants since they are litter-and therefore maintenance-free. But given a choice, what would you rather do -- sweep or battle hay fever? The fact that our urban forests have been propagated with male clones is a crime on two counts: male plants are the pollen-producing offenders, and without female plants to absorb pollen, allergenic pollen counts are on the rise nationwide. Fortunately, what you plant in your own garden can make all the difference -- for you, your family, and your community. In Safe Sex in the Garden, horticulturist Thomas Leo Ogren explores this safe-sex issue, as well as other allergy-related topics like organic gardening, protecting pets against allergies, handling allergy-related stress, and global warming's effect on allergies.

Anyone who has read Tom Ogren's book 'Allergy Free Gardening' knows it is the bible of all allergy books. I recommend this book just as highly -- Ogren's scientific, common-sense approach to allergies is something that will benefit anyone with allergies, and anyone who has friends or relatives with allergies. I very highly recommend both of these books!!
If you have allergies or asthma you'll want to read this book. Packed with information that can be found no where else, Safe Sex in the Garden is a rare treat. Not just about gardening, or plant sex, this interesting book is amazingly quite hard to put down. The author, Thomas Ogren, knows far more about allergies and asthma than most professionals and certainly more than anyone else involved in horticulture. In the end, we with allergies and asthma need to learn how to help ourselves. This book is a darn good way to get started too. Check it out; a very, very decent book.
Safe Sex in the Garden is one of the most interesting books I have ever read and I have learned so very much from it. When I heard this intelligent writer on NPR radio's Weekend Edition I knew instantly his book would be terrifc and well worth reading....as it is. I went right down to the library and borrowed a copy and could not stop reading it! That same day I went to B & N and bought my own copy. I love gardening and Tom Ogren makes it easier, more fun, and much more healthy. Everyone who gardens will enjoy this book! There are so many important things to discover in Safe Sex in the Garden. Like how to stay healthy in your gardens, surrounded by wonderful pollen-free plants. Read and buy this fabulous book by an author who knows plants, pollen, allergies, and the difference between allergy plants and the many exciting safe ones. Another thing I appreciated is his great section on allergies that animals get. I have two cats and a dog and in the future, thanks to this book, my yards will all be allergy friendly for them too. I just can't say enough about this book.
I heard the author, Thomas Ogren on NPR and it was like, Wow! So, so interesting. Just knocked my socks off. By far the best book on allergies I ever read and probably the most unusual and most interesting book I have ever read about gardening. I love to garden, I've got allergies, and I am going to give this valuable book as a present to a ton of my friends. Plant sex, is, well, actually quite fascinating! A super great book!!!!
I'm a teacher, and I've been an avid gardener for 40 years. I have ahuge collection of gardening books. someone gave me a copy of Safe Sex. A gag gift, I thought. I stuck it in the 'bathroom reading.' then I flipped through, read the chapter on poisonous plants and pollen. I was really shocked to find out about our yew pines. and plants that could kill our cats and dogs. A valuable guide.
In a world of way too many books that do no more than scare us, this book tells us of a huge & disquieting problem--the pollution of our landscape through poor choices--and offers solutions. A must-read for health & gardening reasons! you'll never look at pollen the same way again, believe me.
