Sail Away with Me

Overview

Jane Collins-Philippe loves the sea – after all she has spent many years living on a sailboat – and she has collected verses old and new to share her understanding and affection. Some of the poems will be familiar, like Eugene Field’s “Wynken, Blynken and Nod.” Others are from Collins-Philippe’s own pen and are sure to become favorites. Laura Beingessner’s charming art is the perfect complement to a collection that will delight children, whether they are old salts or landlubbers.

A note from the author: OOPS! Credit for Baby’s Boat on the very last page of my book should have gone to Ridley and Gaynor who penned it in 1898. I wouldn’t want to take credit for something I didn’t write. Besides, that would make me very old indeed!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
This collection presents twenty-four poems describing various aspects of the sea, seashore, and sailing. They cover a wide range of styles, meters and emotions. Readers will discover a tongue twister, some nonsense, and funny poems, too. Eleven are traditional, such as Lear's "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean." Thirteen are original poems by Jane Collins-Philippe. One of her strongest is "Baby's Boat," a lovely bedtime poem. Overall, however, her poems are a mixed bag. Some have a lovely, lyrical quality with interesting similes. Other rhymes are a stretch, and the cadence of several poems does not seem as smooth as it should be. The watercolor illustrations are the book's strength. Particularly striking is the illustration for "Splish Splash" ("If all the seas were one sea"). Readers who look closely will see how cleverly Beingessner creates the "one man," the "one tree," and the "one axe." She brings out the humor in the appropriate poems. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo

PreS-Gr 4—Ten traditional or classic verses are followed by 13 original poems in this themed collection. Most of the older ones, including "My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean" and "The Owl and the Pussycat," can be easily found elsewhere. The new verses vary in quality. Some are charming; in "Sailing," "A white moon sets our sails alight/As we follow the sea through the indigo night/Stars, like eyes, will help us see…." Others, like "Cruising," lack the sharp detail and originality good poetry requires: "Traveling the world from/Wonder to wonder;/To countries small/And countries grand,/They find something special/In every land." From children playing on the beach to a mermaid luxuriating in her watery home, the watercolor illustrations depict characters and scenes in a traditional yet whimsical way. Larger collections with a strong interest in nautical topics may want to add this one.—Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
