Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3 Up--`` Illustrated '' may be the key word to describe the entries in this series, each of which explains the function of various types of machines and equipment used in transportation. Full-color illustrations are packed into each book, with additional photographs (both contemporary and historical) and--best of all--fascinating, cut-away diagrams that elucidate and enhance the text. In addition to explaining how a system works, each book briefly sketches the development of the mode of transportation of the title. The text is short, but the reading is often on a high-school level. Many other books are available that give deeper and broader coverage: Time-Life's ``Seafarers'' series, American Heritage History of Railroads in America (1975; o.p.), etc. Nevertheless, this series does an excellent job of presenting an overview of broad and diverse topics. The illustrations are not only great fun to look at, but they are also helpful in providing readers of any age with an understanding of how a machine or system functions. --Don Reaber, Meadowdale High School, Lynnwood, WA
