Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Step onto the deck of the Mayflower and see what it was like to travel in the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America. Look into the hull of a slave ship and learn about how slaves were transported. Explore the Endeavor, the ship of Captain James Cook and the Santa Maria, one of the ships of Christopher Columbus. These names are well known to all students, but the diagrams and additional facts about the ships will tantalize young readers. The voyages are presented in chronological order, with charts giving measurements of the ship, as well as how the ship was powered, and what crew and weapons were on board. The drawings of the ships are stimulating, even without the additional lift-a-flaps. Each flap opens to reveal sketches of the work that occurred in that location. Media specialists trying to fill the void for information on ships will be delighted to find this volume. This will also make an excellent gift book.
