Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Ioragode (yo-luk-O-day) is the daughter of an Algonquin woman captured by Mohawks and the Mohawk chief. When her family dies of small pox, her own face deeply scarred, and her eyesight diminished, Ioragode is adopted by the chief's brother and his family who has a daughter her age named Enita. Ioragode is given a new name, "Tekakwitha" (De-ga-GWITH-a). "Her gentle nature endeared her to everyone." Another captured Algonquin, Anastasia, informs Tekakwitha that "blackrobes" will soon be coming as missionaries. Tekakwitha's mother had been a Christian, and Tekakwitha wants to be one, too. Her present family wants her to marry when she is sixteen. They almost trick her into it. Then Enita informs her that she has married a Christian. When Tekakwitha is eighteen, she tells Father de Lamberville that she wants to be baptized. Then her mother and aunt work her harder than ever. Soon three men come to help her escape to a Christian village where Anastasia also lives. She is given instructions for a first communion. Later Tekakwitha becomes a nun and does penance for her people. She has poor health and dies April 17, 1680, at the age of twenty-four. Pencil drawings enhance the text. Three hundred years later she is declared a saint. Following the names and pronunciation is a challenge. Young people may be inspired to overcome adversity through the Catholic faith.
