This cd of Saint-Saens "Organ Symphony", produced by Herbert Von Karajan in late 1981, is about as excellent a recording of this marvellous symphony as one can purchase. It has oft times been rejected by "purists" as gruesome and over-dramatic...this symphony is supposed to be gigantic! Even Saint-Saens said himself "...I put my all into this symphony...I have nothing more to say"...and he never wrote another symphony after! Karajan leads the wonderful Berlin Philharmonic orchestra through this rousing symphony, using Pierre Cochereau from the organ at the Notre Dame Cathedral to produce a massive and undeniably natural sound. When it comes to pipe organs, it is hard to beat the sound of the Notre Dame. The engineers at DG did a fabulous job laminating the organ part on top of the orchestra to give it a spectacular blend. Overall, this interpretation is top notch and deserves my highest rating.
