Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
The life stories and legends of eighteen saints are retold, notably: John the Baptist, Peter, Paul, Lucy, Augustine, Benedict, and Bernadette. The saint's dates, what the saint is noted for, symbols in paintings depicting the saint, patrons, what the name means, and the feast date are recounted. Saint Francis (1181-1226) was born in Assisi, Italy. He wanted to become a knight. When his father required payment for some material that Francis had sold, they met with the Bishop in the public square. After removing his clothes in public, Francis gave his clothes to his father. A voice told Francis to "repair my house," so he worked at repairing churches. Francis committed himself to a life of devotion and poverty and was the founder of the Franciscan Order of friars. Saint Francis is the patron of Italy. His feast day is on October 4. The pictures are simple line drawings filled in with color. The English adaptation was made by Margaret Edward Moran. Scripture quotations are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Catholic Edition. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
