Overview

It was a time of chaos, when Heaven and Earth were as one, and humans and demons - the youkai - lived together in peace. The foundations of civilization and religion were raised and reinforced in this land of Togenkyo, the paradise known as Shangri-la.

But now, a great evil threatens harmony in this great land. Far to the West, in India, someone is attempting to resurrect the youkai lord Gyumaoh by mixing human science with youkai magic. This forbidden practice has created a Minus Wave of negative energy that is spreading across Shangri-la, poisoning the souls of the youkai and turning them into mindless monsters. The only hope lies in four legendary heroes:

Genjyo Sanzo, a high priest with low morals.
Son Goku, the hungry and mischievous Monkey King, just released from 500 years imprisonment.
Sha Gojyo, a water sprite with an addiction for good smokes and bad women.
Cho Hakkai, the legendary demon slayer, and his transforming dragon Hakuryu.

To save Shangri-la, these unlikely companions, united by fate, must travel together ... INTO THE WEST!

Having been assigned by the human elders the mission of stopping a mystical plague that has afflicted the Youkai with madness, Genjyo Sanzo assembles his team of Youkai warriors, desperately hoping that the disease will not affect them. He sets up qualifying tests that will help him determine the loyalty and worth of Cho Hakkai, Son Goku and Sha Gojyo. The team then journeys west to rid the land of madness.

Recommended for older teens, ages 16+.

A great tale of a journey west...sort of.

Saiyuki is an awesome tale about four guys on their dramatic journey west. It's not for those who are looking a love story, but for those who are looking spiffy demon-killing action, and a preist who packs a Smith & Wesson. Saiyuki follows history (slightly) so it makes learning fun! You'll be hooked right away and will want to read the rest of the series.

    Saiyuki

This is an anime for everyone. It has action, comedy, maybe some romance if you squint. The main cast is all males and this anime has a large number of yaoi fans, which isn't hard to ssee why. As a female reader I can tell you that girls as well as boys will love this book and anime. The art work is beautiful, even in the fight scenes. I think this is a must buy for any mantga or anime fan. The plot is awsome as well. I also highly recommend the anime. I think the English voice actors did and awsome job. Please look into it mkay?

NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

This manga is bathed in blood. People die. LOTS of fighting and some language. Demons. If that don't fase you, then read this manga. You won't be dissapointed. I should know. I wasn't. I warn again, this is not meant for the faint of heart. Other than that I recomend it. It's waaaaaaay cool man.

    five stars, excellent

absolutely wonderfull I fell in love with this series imediatly due to its wonderfull charecters and fantastic artwork. One complaint I have is the fact that the artwork in volume one isnt the greatest(it gets way better) but you cant have everything. There is a high amount of nudity and IS NOT reccomended for younger people.

    Best. Manga. EVER!

An addictive manga with apealing characters and a fastenating, complex plot, Saiyuki is not for people with weak stomachs or not enough cash to buy the whole series at once. A must see for older anime fans, you should be warned that it deals with adult themes. Please buy and enjoy!

    SANZOOOOOO!!!!!

The Monk (not priest MONK) with low morals Sanzo! He is the best...can you tell this is my favorite char.? He is hot.....wish anime guys were real. Anyways it is a story based on a story....yah. It is quite good but uses the traditional characters of: The Brooder: Sanzo(my fav) The brash Hungry Annoying Dude: Goku The Nice Guy: Hakkai and of course what manga novel wouldnt be complete without The Womanizer/Drunk: Gojyo (Complete with life like smokinh habits...) Anyway these only go 1-9 the rest are called Saiyuki: RELOAD and I dont think they are available at present in English (DAMNIT!) so if anyone has found it please email me?
