Salival [CD/VHS]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Between legal battles and digressions like Maynard James Keenan's stint in A Perfect Circle, it's been a long time since fans had a chance to sink their teeth into a new offering from this unflaggingly mercurial combo. This audio-visual compendium -- designed to serve as a taster for Tool's still-pending studio return -- turns the difficult trick of raiding the vaults while maintaining a palpable sense of freshness. On the CD component of Salival -- which is housed in a hardbound book laden with artwork but light on information -- the band indulge their tendency to sprawl, for better and worse.
The comparatively concise "Merkaba" often heard in concert as the extended intro to "Sober" oozes forward in an impressively ethereal manner, while the live version of "Third Eye" snaps through a whiplash-inducing series of twists and turns. An extended, alternate take on "Message to Harry Manback," on the other hand, won't be of use to any but the most die-hard of fans. In terms of eye candy -- or eye pokes, depending on your tolerance for Tool's often-disturbing visual imagery -- Salival also has plenty to offer, in the form of a visual component available on DVD or VHS that collects all four of their most widely screened clips, notably "Prison Sex" and "├ćnema." The DVD version actually includes a fifth video for "Hush Up" from the 1992 EP Opiate. The whole shebang is outfitted in a surreal-looking package that, with the exception of a subdued "Tool" on the outermost layer, contains nary a word of warning about what lies within. That shouldn't scare off fans, however, and novices willing to take the plunge might be surprised as to how intriguing the innards actually are.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
After a four-year hiatus, Tool returns with the elaborately packaged Salival set, which includes a 70-minute CD of previously unreleased live and studio material, a 56-page book of photos and video stills, and a VHS/DVD collection of the group's impressive stop-motion videos. Live versions of "Part of Me," "Push It," and "Third Eye" reaffirm the band's standing as one of alternative metal's most compelling live acts; unreleased studio tracks such as "Message to Harry Manback II" and "L.A. Municipal Court" definitely sound like abandoned material, but offer a look at Tool's quirkier side. Covers of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" and "You Lied" -- a song by bassist Justin Chancellor's previous group Peach -- round out the disc's better-than-average selection of odds and sods.

    Nice Move

Ex-Tool guitarist Adam Jones has appeared in over 16 movies as an actor, including Opiate [EP] (1992), Undertow (1993), and Aenima (1996) to name a few, as well as performing with Tool in the metal documentary of VHS, DVD and CD Set of Salival (2000). The songs that are previously unreleased from Salival are the lost tapes 1989-1999 with ¿You Lied¿ ¿Merkaba¿ ¿No Quarter¿ ¿Lame¿ ¿Lamc¿ and ¿Maynard¿s Dick¿ and that¿s it.
