Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Sally is a "sleek, slim, and simply stunning" slug, while her neighbor Dave is just a common fat one. Sally is busy sinking baskets in basketball and shooting soccer goals, while Dave "loves sleeping sideways in his own slime." Sally sizzles on the snowboard, while Dave sizzles sunbathing. Sally berates Dave, until a "starving sparrow" scoops her up. Dave bravely rescues her, Sally apologizes, and they smile, sliding slowly off "into the sunset." The fun of the unusual tale and the alliterative text is matched by the pictured odd slugs with blobby bodies and eyeballs attached by long wires. The unusual anatomy of these characters does not keep them from doing human things like taking a bath or walking hand-in-hand. There is just enough contextual detail to illustrate the text; the focus is on those loveable slugs, which are drawn with thin black lines and tinted with color here and there. Arena manages to instill these unlikely characters with fetching personalities. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3- A story about two very different slugs. Sally is a superstar Type A personality. "She's sensational at sports. She's sleek, slim and simply stunning." Dave, on the other hand, is "just a common fat slug." While Sally overachieves in one alliterative activity after another, Dave prefers more passive enjoyments such as sleeping and sunbathing. Unsurprisingly, Sally looks down on him and admonishes him to get off his "slimy slug bottom and do something special." Her comments leave him in a sulk, but he soon proves his worth by cleverly saving her from the beak of a deadly sparrow. This Australian import is just quirky enough to establish its message of tolerance and appreciation of differences without drawing too much attention to the moral. Arena's digitally produced illustrations have a simple charm and a subtle sense of humor that will have readers smiling at the first glimpse of Sally's cupid's bow lips and Dave's hovering sunglasses. This book will appeal to a wide audience of young listeners, new readers, language-arts teachers, parents, counselors, and fans of oddball tales.-Jayne Damron, Farmington Community Library, MI

Kirkus Reviews
Sliding along on a slick of sibilants, this episode pairs "sleek, slim and simply stunning" Sally, "sensational at sports," with sloppy neighbor Dave, who spends his time "sleeping sideways in his own slime." But Sally's spiteful sneers suddenly change to shrieks when a predatory sparrow swoops down, and then to suggestive smiles when the slovenly male saves her. Illustrated with simply drawn cartoons featuring blotchy, peanut-shaped blobs with human clothes and eyes on stalks, this spectacularly sexist story may briefly amuse sound-struck fans of the likes of Margaret Atwood's Bashful Bob and Doleful Dorinda (2004), but as a gooey romance it won't slide off the shelves. Better to read Susan Pearson's Slugs in Love (2006), illustrated by Kevin O'Malley. (Picture book. 6-8)
