Nice, pleasant photos about a great time of life.

Twelve is a magical age at which one can simultaneously experience the worlds of childhood and adulthood. It's the age at which I was happiest, so I automatically revere books that capture that feeling, as this book does. Though not as daring as 'Still Time' or 'Immediate Family,' one of the pictures from this book made it to the cover of a (terrific) novel about a 12-year-old: 'The Saskiad.' The inclusion of the photographer's own picture at twelve (at the end of the book) was a nice touch. Sally Mann is often compared with Jock Sturgis. Sturgis wrote that Mann is able to capture a close family feel that he cannot. On the other hand, Mann's pictures lack the simplicity and focus (figurative & literal) of Sturgis photos. It's a pity Mann moved on to other subject matter, in any case. Books such as this are her forte' and were the reason for her fame.
