Chapter One

    Early one morning, far upstream,
    as little fishies swam
    Was born a fish, as cute as can be,
    Named Smallfry Salmon Sam.
    By now he was an orphan,
    As salmon always are.
    His parents did a job well done,
    And well it was by far.

    Just to be a salmon
    Is a wonder in itself;
    You wonder how they get upstream,
    You wonder 'bout their health.
    By the time they wind up giving birth,
    You ask or wonder why
    They go through all that trouble
    Just to spawn their eggs then die.

    Well, Sam, he knew his destiny;
    He knew he'd have his fun.
    He knew he'd play
    Until the day
    Of his Great Salmon Run.

    So he swam right down the stream,
    And he swam back up again;
    Then he swam down to the Great Dam Wall,
    And this was new to him.
    The dam was built by great men
    Who thought up this tricky scheme
    To hold back all the water
    From a million different streams.

    It didn't make much difference
    As to how Sam was to pass;
    When they opened up the floodgates,
    Fish and everything flowed through fast.
    Yes, Sam's life was all cut out for him,
    As to how he'd go and come;
    But he still had almost three full years
    Before his Great Salmon Run.

    So he met new friends
    And played the games
    That fishies always do;
    Like hide-and-seek and tag-you're-it,
    And fishy's peek-a-boo!

    Sometimes he'd meet new fish,
    But as soon as they made friends,
    A worm would come down on a hook,
    And he'd never be seen again.
    Well, by now Sam was used to that,
    And once he met the worm.
    He bit it once, he bit it twice;
    Then it grabbed his lip and squirmed.

    Sam was almost out of the water;
    He could see the light of day.
    Just then he had a stroke of luck;
    Sam slipped and swam away.
    That day Sam was lucky;
    He learned his lesson well.
    If a worm is shaped just like a hook,
    Don't touch it, he could tell!
