Buried treasure is always a good reason to dig up adventure! There's treasure buried in Oakdale! To find it, Wishbone, Joe, Samantha and David must enter the condemned Trumbull barn. This reminds Wishbone of the high-seas tale "Treasure Island", and he imagines himself as the orphaned Jim Hawkins, who follows up a map to excitement--and treasure!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
In case you have been living in a cave, Wishbone is the very successful Jack Russell terrier star of a PBS television show which introduces youngsters to great literature by retelling the stories with Wishbone playing one of the parts, complete with period costumes. Now, the television version is further distilled in book form. Retaining the framing references to Oakdale, Wishbone's hometown, the book will not disappoint fans of the television show. Stevenson's original tale doesn't suffer too greatly, with the complexity of Long John Silver's character and the courage of Jim Hawkins and Captain Smollett still shining through the suspenseful saga. I had rather hoped the TV show would inspire young readers to seek out the original material rather than a spinoff book, but I suppose any book they pick up as a result is a victory.
Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Number 2 in "The Adventures of Wishbone" series continues on its quest of gutting the classics. This time the intrepid Jack Russell terrier takes on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. A dog cast as Jim Hawkins? It's a stretch, but apparently kids buy into the fantasy. One only wonders why they can't be as easily convinced to read the real McCoy.
