Children's Literature
Max and Hap are two cat friends who find and leap into a paper bag. Their third pal, young Sam, has a bit more trouble completing this task until he finds a box from which he can jump. He succeeds but ends up landing on his buddies and ripping the bag in the process. A light-hearted look at the mischief of a young feline, the story is simple and sweet. To complete the warm and inviting illustrations, the artist covered the background with burnt sienna to give it a special glow and then used oil paints to bring his characters to life. The images parallel the text perfectly, providing visual cues for young readers in their formulation of words and meaning. This leveled reader, part of the "Green Light Readers" series, is designed for beginning readers and employs simple words, fun rhymes and rhythms, and familiar situations. Texts in the series also include a variety of story-related activities designed to supplement understanding and engagement. In this story, young readers are encouraged to imitate their own favorite animals in a follow-the-leader game, answer a series of questions that require lower- and higher-order thinking, make a finger puppet of the main character, and complete a drawing and writing activity to connect the story to their own lives. A well-written, nicely-illustrated text worth having in any collection for young readers. 2003, Harcourt, Ages 4 to 6.
