PreS-Gr 3-- Hessie, who found out that stepmothers can be pretty nice in The Not-So-Wicked Stepmother (Viking, 1987), returns to the house by the lake to spend another summer with her father and Molly. But things have changed. There is a baby now, and he is getting a lot of attention. Hessie feels that everything revolves around Sam and finally runs into the woods to escape all the rules about babies. Her father comforts her by telling her about herself as a baby and then points out some advantages to being a big sister. The colorful watercolor illustrations have a slightly lopsided appearance, giving them a childlike quality. A reassuring book, written with a loving tone. --Phyllis K.
