"My name is Samantha Green-call me Sam-and I'm a private eye."

Desperately in search of your stolen bicycle? Has your cat gone mysteriously missing? Meet Samantha "Sam" Green, Briarton's most precocious private eye. She may be only ten years old, but that's not stopping her from figuring out some very vexing mysteries. Be it a slinking shadow in the night or a pesky vandal on the prowl, Sam has a flair for cracking the toughest case wide open-and getting herself grounded along the way. Now, just in time for Halloween, Sam faces her most baffling and downright spooky case yet. Samantha Green and the Case of the Haunted Pumpkin is Christy Lynn Allen's clever, heartwarming mystery for young readers from ages eight to twelve.

With Halloween one week away, a new mystery comes knocking at Sam's door, this time in the form of scary Mrs. Finkel, Briarton's new librarian and suspected witch. When Mrs. Finkel asks for Sam's help to investigate haunting pumpkin deliveries and "noises that vanish," Sam is admittedly terrified, but her curious nature just can't resist the challenge. With the help of her best friend, Brian; favorite babysitter, Jenn; and trusty yellow Lab, Murphy, Sam delves into her most complex case yet.

Soon, she is full-tilt into her investigation of the spooky, unexplainable events occurring at Mrs. Finkel's house, from the mounting pile of pumpkins left on her doorstep to menacing notes attempting to run her out of town.

As Sam chases the trail of clues, she uncovers yet another mystery-that of Mrs. Finkel herself! Fast-paced with plenty of plot twists, it's serious fun for anyone who loves a good mystery, while also shining new light on stereotypes. Samantha Green and the Case of the Haunted Pumpkin is a delightful story of one smart cookie who can crack the toughest case going.

Allen's debut children's mystery, the first installment of a planned series, introduces a likable kid detective as she takes a case involving unwanted jack-o'-lanterns. As the story begins, the narrator, 10-year-old detective Samantha Green, mentions a series of previous neighborhood cases that she and her yellow Labrador retriever, Murphy, have solved, including one involving a missing bike and another a lost cat. These successes earn her a new case: Samantha's spooky neighbor, Mrs. Finkel, has been receiving threateningly carved pumpkins on her front porch, sometimes with even more alarming notes attached. At the same time, Mrs. Finkel finds that broken items in her house are being mysteriously repaired; the home's familiar creaks and cracks have somehow disappeared. She attempts to enlist Samantha's help in solving the mystery, but the unkempt woman's reputation as a witch--suggested by her shapeless black clothing and bloodshot eyes--makes the young detective hesitant to take on the investigation. The Halloween-themed narrative brings to life the novel's detailed setting and richly developed characters, including Samantha's goofy little sister. Samantha's teenage babysitter encourages her to never to judge people by their appearances. After the detective accepts this sage advice, she begins to unravel Mrs. Finkel's mysteries--including the true story behind her witch-like appearance. Samantha eventually solves the case, but the resolution has no major twists or shocking revelations and may not surprise serious young readers. However, the novel's emotional depth, engaging prose style, appealing characters and witty protagonist overcome the story's predictability. A fine debut for a new series and a welcome addition to the young-detective genre.

Meet the Author

Author Christy Lynn Allen holds a bachelors degree in English from University of Michigan. She was inspired to write Samantha Green and the Case of the Haunted Pumpkin, her first middle grade novel, by the young lady she mentors. Almost ten years old at the time, her young friend possessed incredible observation skills (like Samantha Green), and she'd been grounded just before Halloween. Allen lives in the Charlotte, NC area with her husband, John, and their beloved dog, Murphy, the basis for Samantha Green's goofy yellow Lab.

Excellent Mystery for the Nancy Drew in You! What a pleasure it was to receive “Samantha Green and the Case of the Haunted Pumpkin” from Christy! Samantha is not your average 10 year old girl. No, she is the go-to girl when something goes missing or a mystery needs solving. Samantha is a quirky girl with a huge personality. I think that most girls her age will relate easily. My 32-year old self really enjoyed this book. Samantha gets an unlikely knock at the door from, the suspected witch next door, Mrs. Finkel. Someone is delivering pumpkins to her front yard. Since Mrs. Finkel is not so popular with the kids in Briarton, she hopes that Samantha can help her out and solve this mystery. Sam is known for her sharp skills in solving mysteries in the neighborhood. Digging right into the book, the story starts out with Sam tackling a suspect in the mysterious disappearance of her best friend’s bike. I actually giggled because I could just see this young girl running down one of her teachers. This book is filled with fun, mystery and parents will also love the vocabulary used. Not only was “Samantha Green and the Case of the Haunted Pumpkin” filled with age-appropriate mysteries to be solved; it also has a huge moral behind it. It is so easy to “judge a book by its cover” and written in these pages, is a great lesson for young kids to learn. You never really know who someone is until you get to know them. No matter what, people need to be loved. “NJBC”
