Library Journal
Samdhong Rinpoche, recognized as the fourth incarnation of an enlightened Tibetan lama, has been the elected prime minister of the Tibetan government in exile since 2001. He holds a doctorate in Buddhist sciences from the University of Drepung, Tibet; has served as a teacher to Tibetan monks in exile; and directed the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies (1988-91). This important work was compiled from 20 hours of interviews with Rinpoche by editor Roebert (founder & coordinator, South African Friends of Tibet). It provides a Buddhist viewpoint of the political arena, arguing that the current state of the world is a deterioration of essential truth and wisdom and explaining how Buddhist principles might be applied to political situations. Maintaining that evolution can be influenced by humanity, a Buddhist analysis explains the current state of law, morality, science, and art. The Chinese occupation of Tibet is discussed in depth, and the importance of continued nonviolence is emphasized. The discussions end with a basic primer on Buddhist philosophy. Including a foreword by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, this is recommended for academic and public libraries.-Jerry Shuttle, East Tennessee State Univ.
