Overview

"The most winning junior detective ever in teen lit. (Take that, Nancy Drew!)" —Midwest Children's Book Review

It's Sammy's birthday, which should be a good thing, except that Dorito, Sammy's cat, is missing, and while Sammy's searching for him, she finds three dead cats in dumpsters around town. Worse still, Miss Kitty, a psycho cat lady, blames Sammy when it turns out one of the dead cats belonged to her. As if Sammy didn't have enough on her hands investigating these furry felonies, her mother has a confession to make: she lied about Sammy's age so she could start her in school a year early. So—surprise!—Sammy isn't turning 14 at all, she's going to be unlucky 13 for another whole year.

Better luck next year, Sammy. . . .

The Sammy Keyes mysteries are fast-paced, funny, thoroughly modern, and true whodunits. Each mystery is exciting and dramatic, but it's the drama in Sammy's personal life that keeps readers coming back to see what happens next with her love interest Casey, her soap-star mother, and her mysterious father.

When cats begin to mysteriously disappear in Santa Martina, thirteen-year-old friends Sammy and Holly start snooping around town to find out what is happening.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Ever hear of Hercule Poirot? Jessica Fletcher? Colombo? They're nothing compared to thirteen-year-old detective Sammy Keyes. The latest from this gifted detective begins with the discovery of a dead cat in a dumpster. While others may ignore this, Sammy knows that something sinister is going on. When the Kitty Queen, a lady who lives with dozens of cats and likes to be called Ms. Kitty, accuses her of being the culprit, Sammy can't stay out of it. Add to that the wrestling school next door filled with shady characters, her arch enemy Heather trying to steal her good luck charm (given to her by Heather's brother) and her mother's admission that she really isn't turning fourteen, and you have the making of a very bad birthday. Don't worry, though. Just like her adult predecessors, Sammy finds the clues and solves the case in the end. If you haven't met Sammy Keyes yet, now is the time. She is intelligent and vivacious, but is still realistic. She is a strong female character who is looking for more than just a boyfriend. A highly recommended read. 2004, Knopf, Ages 10 to 14.

Children's Literature - Nancy Partridge
America's most amazing young super sleuth is at it again, in this ninth book of the "Sammy Keyes" mystery series. It is Sammy's birthday, and all kinds of crazy things are going on. Her cat disappears and, much worse, she starts finding dead cats in random dumpsters. Could there seriously be a neighborhood cat killer? Dealing with such things is all in a day's work for Sammy, but still, it's pretty gross. Not only that, her mom comes back from Hollywood, only to mess with her head with some pretty upsetting news. Van Draanen weaves a seamless plot full of suspense and adventure, as she also reveals Sammy's inner struggles to believe in herself. Her worldliness gives her a tough and compelling edge, while a relentless honesty is funny and refreshing. It is no wonder this series is so popular.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Once again Sammy Keyes is up to her ears in mystery. When she discovers a succession of cats killed in bizarre ways and left in dumpsters around town, she tries to figure out who would commit such a crime. Then her mother reappears and confesses that she had changed Sammy's birth certificate to get her into kindergarten so she is actually turning 13 on her birthday-again. Sammy, anxious to move beyond the unlucky number, is beside herself. But she learns to cope with the situations in her life and solves the cat mystery as well. Heather, her archenemy, reappears, yet this time Sammy has more good luck than bad in dealing with her-probably due to the four-leaf clover given to her by Heather's brother, Casey. Throughout the book, details refer back to earlier stories but not so much so that readers new to the series will be lost. And Sammy's anger at her mother for abandoning her, mean girls at school, and her ambivalence about her attraction to Casey will strike a chord with young teens. Another hit in a solid series.-Diana Pierce, Running Brushy Middle School, Cedar Park, TX Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal

Gr 3-6 - Sammy is back and ready to solve yet another mystery, this time involving disappearing cats, in Wendelin Van Draanen's ninth mystery (Knopf, 2004) in this popular series. With the help of her friend Holly, a few moves learned at the new wrestling school, a lucky charm, and her curious and determined nature, Sammy uncovers the warped reason behind the missing cats. Interspersed throughout the story are some personal issues that Sammy must face including Heather, her nemesis, a budding romance with Heather's brother, a visit from her mother, and being told that the date of her birthday is not quite what she thought it was. Tara Sands's voice is as spunky as Sammy herself. With pacing, tone, and volume consistent with the mood of each part of the story and the personalities of the characters, Sands creates a well-balanced listening experience with characters that are both fun and intriguing. While some of the details in the missing cat mystery are a bit disturbing, fans of the series will not be disappointed.-Stephanie A. Squicciarini, Fairport Public Library, NY

Psycho Kitty Queen by Caitlyn Gordy

I loved this book! It was my favorite book in the series! The setting took place 2 days before Sammy's birthday. She finds out that this woman who is opsessed with cats and she tells people to call her kitty. She told sammy that there is a dog somewhere killing all her cats. Casey (her brother) says it is very lucky to have a horse shoe tied to your shoe. Heather got really mad and tries to steal it. But later that day Heather and dher friends tried to beat her up. But sammy beat them up first. Now she is trying to figure out who ElGato is. But in the end sammy and her best friend holl got stuck in a sticky situation. They went up into this abandon building and saw people putting a cat in this thorned up ring. Then they put a dog in the ring and they betted on who would die first after the cat dies they through them away. They also Figured out who ElGato was! Officer Broach!
