Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Syd Hoff's classic was one of the original "And I Can Read Book," and it still works its magic on toddlers and learning readers alike. There is something very endearing about Sammy's desire to see the world;his wide-eyed exploration of it;his ability to learn to read—and write his name—after only one day in school;and his satisfaction in returning home to his pool in the zoo after a full day of adventures, his curiosity sated. Sammy becomes the child in all of us. We want our adventures, but isn't it wonderful to have a home to return to? Hoff's simple words convey these feelings just right, and his colorful 1950s-style illustrations still work. This recent repackaging of the book includes an audiotape read with fulsome importance—offset by jaunty background music. But the original book still stands on its own. 2000 (orig. 1959), HarperChildren's Audio, $14.95. Ages 2 to 6. Reviewer:Kathleen Karr

    Son loves the book!

My 3-year-old loves the book and the story is helping him learn to read and identify letters. Sammy the Seal has taught us all about "S" words, and we are working on a number of others too! Great book!

    Very engaging

My 2 year old son loves Sammy the Seal. We read it a couple of times before bed every night. He likes the big pictures of the other zoo animals and has asks a lot of questions about what all the people are doing once Sammy gets to the City.

Helping a child in a crisis

My 13yr old daughter was with myself and my sister in the emergency room of the hospital waiting to see the doctor for an exam that no female should ever have to wait for. My sister picked up this book and started to read it out loud to my daughter and it took away some of the tension that she was feeling. Ever since that day she has been looking for a copy of this book to have for herself so that she can hold it in the trying times to come.
