Sam's Pizza

( 4 )

Overview

Delivered fresh and hot from David Pelham is this saucy pop-up novelty treat, a trompe l'oeil pizza pie created with loving thoughtfulness by one silbling for another. Only the best ingredients will do when Sam is cooking for his baby sister. He might hold the anchovies, but he won't forget to line the crust with baby eels, a roadkill centipede, sheep's eyes, and a host of other unbelieveably yucky delicacies! Full color. 11 spreads.

Delivered in a miniature pizza box, Sam's Pizza by David Pelham is a round lift-the-flap book, topped with a sprig of paper basil and nestled in a paper crust. In the rhyming story, a crafty boy making pizza for his sister slips in some extras: a toad in with the mushrooms, a bee smothered with tomato sauce. Each right-hand page pictures a new layer of pizza topping, and lifting the flaps reveals the gruesome additions. Rhymes help readers anticipate the hidden items. The sister, by the way, gets her revenge.

some food for thought Delivered in a miniature pizza box, Sam's Pizza by David Pelham is a round lift-the-flap book, topped with a sprig of paper basil and nestled in a paper crust. The sandwich-shaped, spiral-bound Messipes by Lynn Gordon, illus. by Susan Synarski, is a microwave cookbook of messy foods. The "sandwich" is inventively indexed with tabs shaped like slices of pickle, tomato, onion, cheese and lettuce. Brightly bordered laminated pages offer recipes for "Nutty Chocolate Fun-Do," flying-saucer-shaped "Eggstraterrestrials" and other treats.
