Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Active Server Pages technology has been used to build many of the world's leading e-commerce sites, including (dare we say it?) this one. It's a remarkably flexible solution for e-commerce development. If you're already comfortable with VBScript (or even VB), and maybe a little SQL, SAMS Teach Yourself E-Commerce Programming With ASP In 21 Days will have you performing e-commerce magic almost as quickly as your boss wants it.

In this project-based course, you'll walk through building many of the meat-and-potatoes features of a typical e-commerce site, and several advanced features as well. In Week I, you'll write ASP scripts that retrieve customer information, track it with cookies and session variables; manage a catalog; create product pages; and implement product search.

In Week II, you'll create a subscription-based, database-integrated site with a user registration system that restricts some pages to paying customers. Finally, in Week III, you'll learn techniques for administering your store remotely with ASP scripts; debugging your ASP-based e-commerce applications; sending email from ASP pages; generating store reports; managing banner advertising; and more. You'll find all the projects on the accompanying CD-ROM — a great starting point for the real-world stuff your boss is banging on you for!

    Grr!

I was disappointed in this book. I hoped it would go more in depth on certain topics that confused me. When I tried the CD it really didn't help me.

    100% coverage

This is the first time I have ever bought a book that actually gave me all the information I needed to accomplish a task set before me. The book is very well written and very clearly represents it's content. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in starting their own internet web store or if you would like a book on database programming with ASP.

This Book Got A Bad Rap

I really enjoyed this book but was concerned when I read some bad reviews on it. I purchased another ASP/E-Commerce book that got good reviews but I found this book much, much better. This book is direct, informative, thorough and has a great index. I would definitely recommend it for VB programmers who want to learn ASP/E-Commerce.

    E-commerce falls flat

This book starts out OK and is a good start for ASP programming, but I wouldn't want to build a production e-commerce site out of their shopping cart/order system. Orders have a one to many relationship between the detail items (which should contain information about each line item) and the order header (which contains information like shipping address, total cost, etc...). The example in this book assigns each detail item it's own order number. Not good. I didn't expect the code in the book to be a turn-key e-commerce storefront, but the slacked-off order system is very lame. An OK book for learning ASP concepts.

    Two Stars for Effort

Book claims to be for beginners and intermediate but I am a beginner to ASP and found that his scripts are incomplete. In many places in the book he claims the file is on the cd rom but it is not. This book is about 600 pages and I read the first 300. I am a programmer and have not been able to make his exaples work after I got to about page 275 and the full source is not on the disk. What is on the disk for day 13 does not resemlbe anything in the book. I admire that he wrote the book but for a begginner it didn't make the grade. Had the disk contained what it claimed it might have been a good book
