    Excellent for an Introduction into Java

    Although very good at introducing many basic and advanced features of Java, I was left with no sense of direction upon finishing this book. I attempted to start my own programming projects in Java after reading it, but was left wondering how to apply what I had read. The book offers no exercises, which is a definite weakness. This book is a very good reference for many aspects of Java 2, but to really learn the language and to program with the language, you'd need a book in companion to this one that drives home more of the 'programming theory' behind Java.

    Great for introduction.

    This book is a good book for an introduction in programming in java. It does not, however teach you Java in 21 day. After reading this book, I did have a better understanding of what Java is about. However, the knowledge I had was not adequate enough for me to actually program, for that I needed another book. If your goal is just to familiarize yourself with Java, that is the book for you. But if you are actually planning to program after reading this, I would not recommend it.
