Overview

Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL, and Apache in 24 Hours combines coverage of these three popular open-source Web development tools into one easy-to-understand book — and it comes with one easy-to-use Starter Kit CD-ROM for Windows or Linux.

The book teaches the reader to install, configure and set up the PHP scripting language, the MySQL database system, and the Apache Web server.

By the end of this book the reader will understand how these technologies work, and — more importantly — how they can work together to create a dynamic Web site.

After creating a simple Web site using these tools, the reader will be able to manage a simple mailing list, and to create an online address book, shopping cart, and storefront.

The book also teaches the reader how to fine tune Apache and MySQL, and covers simple Web server security.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Three key open source technologies -- Apache, MySQL, and PHP -- integrate splendidly to offer a complete (and free!) solution for building dynamic Web sites. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could learn all three at once -- and learn how to use them together, to solve real problems?

You can. In this book, Julie C. Meloni brings together all three technologies in one well-organized course. Meloni begins by walking you through installing all three packages from the accompanying CD-ROM. Next, she teaches you all the PHP you need to get rolling, from flow control to basic SQL. In Part III, you’ll learn how to work with forms, files, dates, times, and sessions, and restrict access to your applications.

Meloni then walks you through building four common PHP applications: mailing lists, online address books, storefronts, and shopping cart mechanisms. In the book’s final three hour-long lessons, you’ll learn to tune both Apache and MySQL, and take a closer look at securing Apache.

If you know how to build static web sites with HTML, you have all the background you need to succeed with this book. And if you’ve ever programmed or used a database, you’re really in clover. Bill Camarda

If you want to learn MYSQL & PHP, look no further

I purchased 3 books on MySQL & PHP: MySQL/PHP for Dummies, The Absolute Beginner's Guide to MySQL & PHP, and this one. The dummies book is a typical dummies book (geared towards the illiterate). The Absolute Beginner's Guide was a bit better but no meat. This book has it all! You'll get to the heart of the matter. The beginning chapters on downloading and installing the 3 programs is very straightforward (assuming you know some basic Linux). But the best part is the later chapters that get into getting MySQL and PHP working together.

    Almost Perfect

I think this book is for novice user's. At least some kind of html or javascript experience. All the installing is easy if you know how to use a computer well. If your new to php, html, javascript,or etc. you might have a little problem setting it up and programming.

    Serves it's purpose

Great Book, Defintly Great, I highly recommend, but it's not recommended for people who dont have too much technical expereience, if you know windows and can install programs and have a good understanding of that, you'll do well, if you like linux and are familiar with the linux os and compiling software, you'll do well. It's written for the reader who has some great computer experience, not the beginner or mac user.

Useless in less than 20 minutes

I picked up this book figuring that it would help me figure out the basics of how to install and get PHP, MySQL and Apache up and talking to one another. I figured wrong. If each chapter is supposed to take an hour to read and complete this book was useless in less than 20 minutes. It didn't tell me how to get MySQL started after installing it. Even with the 'Advanced' section later in the book the stuff they put back there could have been in chapter one. It still wouldn't have made a difference since the best advice they gave was 'if you have any problems getting it working RTFM.' This book is going back to the store and I am just going to use Easy PHP to install the three. If I was able to understand all the instructions and technical stuff I wouldn't NEED the book in the first place. When I am ready for the true technical stuff I'll just install the three myself and compare settings to an already working server. Thanks for nothing...

    Save your money

This book was one of the worst books I bought in a long time. I am now to DB and Linux. The instruction on how to install php and apache was 100% useless. The rest of the book shows you examples, but not how to get to the point of the example.
