Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy DaPolito
Sam, the bear, plays outside with his raccoon friend Billy on a cold winter morning. The two young boys ride their tricycles around the yard, bumping into each other and enjoying the ensuing crashes. When Sam gets too hot, he takes off his red coat. At lunch, his mother asks where it is, and Sam is afraid he's lost it. But Billy comes to the door with the missing coat, and Sam exclaims about his good luck. The next day, because it's colder still, Sam wears both his red coat and his fuzzy green mittens. But he takes the mittens off in the garage to hammer a wobbly wheel on his tricycle. At lunch time, his mother asks where his mittens are, and again Sam doesn't know. This time, his father comes in with the lost mittens, and Sam cheers his good luck. The third day, the temperature is even colder, but just as Sam is going outside a package containing a warm blue hat arrives from his grandmother. Sam rushes to climb the fence between his yard and Billy's so he can show off his present. But the hat is no longer on his head and Sam realizes he's already lost it. When he's just about given up trying to figure out where it is, he falls over backward and sees it caught on a tree branch near the fence. He once more congratulates himself on his good luck, and he and Billy climb the tree to rescue the hat. Once it's back on his head, snow starts to fall and both boys are glad for the warmth of their wooly hats. This time, Sam is delighted that they're both lucky. The illustrations are as charming as the story. Soft, warm colors illuminate the activities of the boys and Sam's parents. The sense of motion as the boys ride and Sam climbs the fence is particularly appealing.
School Library Journal
PreS-Sam is absentminded. While outside playing, the little cub removes his coat. Just as his mother discovers that it is missing, his friend returns it. The next day, the bear takes off his mittens to fix his bike and returns home without them. Just then his father comes home bearing the mittens, found in the garage. Then Sam loses the hat his Grandma sent. Struggling to remember where it could be, he topples over and looks up to find it stuck on a tree branch above the fence he just climbed. The simple story contains minimal action, but children will relate to Sam's forgetfulness. McPhail's detailed and textured watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations create a warm and welcoming feeling. The book will work best with one-on-one guided reading, but it can also be used as a dialogic reading exercise.-Linda Zeilstra Sawyer, Skokie Public Library, IL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A young bear cub who can't keep track of his belongings is determined not to lose his new hat. Sam doesn't mean to lose his things; it just seems to happen. While playing with his best friend Billy, he gets too hot and takes off his red winter coat. Luckily, Billy finds it and delivers it to his door. It is likewise with his green fuzzy mittens; Papa finds them in the garage. When he gets a package from Grandma, he is so excited to show Billy his wonderful blue wooly hat that he takes a shortcut-and loses it. But as luck would have it, it isn't lost very long. McPhail's artwork perfectly suits the text, with soft colors, plump figures and expressive faces. Perfect for those loved ones who just can't seem to remember where they last saw. . . . Too bad everyone's not as lucky as Sam. (Picture book. 3-7)
