Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer who crossed the Atlantic in search of a trade route to India and land for settlers. He mapped much of northeastern North America and founded Quebec in present day Canada. In this book from the "In the Footsteps of Explorers" series, readers will be introduced to the explorer's life and the times in which he lived. Two-page chapters give basic information on such topics as European trade and exploration of the 1500s and 1600s, the founding and colonization of New France, life in the colonies, and the threats posed by the Native Americans and the English. Instead of the traditional time line found at the end of the book, important dates are listed along the margin of relevant pages. Sidebars add bits of additional information on the beaver hat fashion craze and the Order of Good Cheer, a club established to keep colonists in high spirits during the long winters. Illustrated with well-captioned drawings and a few photographs. A brief glossary and an index are included. 2006, Crabtree Publishing Company, and Ages 9 to 12.
