A masterful biography of the man who rivals Shakespeare in our literary inheritance.
Posted February 26, 2009
Dr. Johnson turns 300 this September. The man should be given a huge celebratory party. We could all do with a reminder of his wit and wisdom as well as benefit from his still remarkably relevant moral compass. Jackson Bate's book, some thirty years old, is a trenchantly intimate look at one of the English language's greatest masters. Not just a biography, but also a useful guide on how to live one's life (albeit hopefully without Johnson's many infirmities...)Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
