    Samuel Johnson needs a big birthday party this year

    Dr. Johnson turns 300 this September. The man should be given a huge celebratory party. We could all do with a reminder of his wit and wisdom as well as benefit from his still remarkably relevant moral compass. Jackson Bate's book, some thirty years old, is a trenchantly intimate look at one of the English language's greatest masters. Not just a biography, but also a useful guide on how to live one's life (albeit hopefully without Johnson's many infirmities...)
