I Also Recommend:
I started to read the diary, then felt that I was reading about a person's life, but didn't know the person.
Although this book is over 100 years old, it is very readable and very informative about the man and his times. I read it in a day, it was that engaging!
It covers his family background, his increasing power and influence and the later false accusations from enemies relating to his employment in Government, his personality and his prized library, that included his ciphered 10-year diary entries only decoded about 100 years after his death. The author also explains why the diary is written with pseudo-french phrases; essentially another layer of security.
Now I can read his diary more comfortably, have a fuller understanding of the entries and enjoy the insight into life during the Restoration period.
