Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One of the "Great Zoos of the United States," this slim volume introduces the young reader to a world-famous zoo. We learn that it was founded in 1916 on a fluke—all because Dr. Wegeforth (a one-time circus member) happened to hear a lion named Prince roar. The zoo has grown to over 100 acres with 800 species and subspecies, including endangered animals and plants. They have over 1,000 reptiles and amphibians alone. The emphasis is to make the animals feel like they're living in the wild. Animal species are mixed as they would be in nature, and zookeepers give them things to do for enrichment. The most famous baby here is Hua Mei, an offspring of two giant pandas brought from China. Successful heart surgery was performed on Karen an orangutan in this zoo. In 1972, Dr. Shroeder, director of the zoo, opened the San Diego Wild Animal Park nearby where herds of animals roam over 1,000 acres of land that visitors can explore by train. The book should make readers want to go see all of this for themselves. It is attractively laid out with authentic photos, a map, and sidebars, plus a glossary, index, and Web site. 2003, PowerKids Press/The Rosen Publishing Group
