San Leandro
Cherry festivals, Holy Ghost festas, oyster pirates, tractors, squatters, Portuguesethe many threads of San Leandros past have woven a rich historical tapestry underlying the modern city of San Leandro. These 15 square miles between San Francisco Bay and the East Bay hills have been an Ohlone village, a Spanish rancho, a small farm town, the Portuguese capital of the West, an industrial center, and a major metropolitan suburb as a succession of new people has transformed the area.

About the Author

Author Cynthia Vrilakas Simons has selected the best images from the San Leandro Historical Photograph and Document Collection and other sources to reveal the many layers of San Leandros past. Now retired, the author spent several years as the San Leandro local history librarian, and planned and wrote the exhibits for the new San Leandro Museum and the History Walk. Using the knowledge gained in her local history work, Simons leads the reader through San Leandro from the time when the Ohlone Indians lived in a world with grizzlies, vast flocks of birds, and herds of antelope and deer, to the 21st-century world of suburban homes, freeways, and changing technologies.
