Meet the Author

From ancient tribes to European explorers, San Luis Obispo has mesmerized all of those who have had the fortune to see it. In San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly, author Thomas Maxwell-Long brings the beauty and richness of this community into a single volume; documenting the growth of San Luis Obispo along the 19th and 20th centuries with remarkable, vintage postcards. The story of San Luis Obispo cannot be told without telling the story of the California Polytechnic School, for it is within the symbiosis of this relationship that San Luis Obispo was able to establish itself as one of the most unique communities in California.

    Excellent book!

This book has the most interesting historical pictures from around SLO that I have ever seen. From the stage coach holdup in the downdown to the train wrecks and refinery explosions, all from a hundred years ago, I went through every page before putting it down. My kids went to Cal Poly (they bought me the book) and the pictures of that school from its earliest years are perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the book. I certainly had a great time reading this.

San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly in Vintage Postcards,California (Postcard History Series)

The author has assembled an interesting collection of histories and historical photographs. I have been collecting local history books on San Luis Obipo for years and this is the best one to date in terms of quality of format, writing, and pictures. The history on Cal Poly is exceptional and there are many histories on the towns around the county. I believe the title is in reference to SLO county, though much is on the city and Cal poly.

San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly in Vintage Postcards,California (Postcard History Series)

I am a San Luis Obispo native and Cal Poly Alumnus and this book has the finest collection of historic pictures of the city, county and Cal Poly that I have ever found. The clarity of the pictures, the interesting historical facts and the layout make this book a must for anyone that is interested in the areas that it covers. I recommend this book.
