Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Lucy Freeman
Wicked Lovely does not immediately grab the reader, but after a somewhat slow introduction proceeds to become captivating and action packed for the remainder of the graphic novel. Although certainly entertaining throughout, there were some plot lines that were confusing and difficult to follow. Characters are well developed and relatable in this enjoyable and adventurous read that will surely enchant many fans. Reviewer: Lucy Freeman, Teen Reviewer
VOYA - Geri Diorio
This American manga (it reads left to right) is a spin-off from Marr's young adult faerie tales. For readers who are familiar with the Wicked Lovely books, some of the characters and settings will be recognizable, but one does not need to know these works to follow the slender story. Rika is a faerie, living alone in the desert. She spends her time painting and studying nature while also watching a young artist named Jayce. Rika has a crush on the young man and saves him from other, malevolent faeries who push him off a cliff. Rika and Jayce share an attraction, but other fey play games with them; trying to keep them apart and even hurt Jayce. There is not a lot of story here. Boy meets fey, boy falls for fey, fey's "family" tries to keep them apart. But many love stories have hinged on less, and the scenes of longing combined with some fast action sequences will keep readers' attention. The art is quite simplistic and many of the characters look alike. Sharp-eyed readers will be able to tell the characters apart by eyelashes (girls) or lack thereof (boys). Jayce's dreadlocks often end up looking like tentacles, which can be disconcerting, but overall, fans of love stories and faeries have a nice introduction to manga in this volume.
