Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Part of the fun of sand castles is running through them and starting over again, and that's exactly what happens in this funny and witty board book. Jack Truck, the main character, presents ten sand castles made by his friends, fellow trucks with names such as Dump Truck Dan, Hook and Ladder Lucy, and Cement Mixer Melvin. All of the sand castles made by his friends are wonderful creations, and they include a giant toaster, a tyrannosaurus Rex, and a huge ice cream cone. Jack and his friends are proud of their immense sand castles, but after the last, and tenth, castle is introduced, it's time to plow them under! After all the castles are gone, Jack and his friends decide that they have had such a good time that they'll do it all over again. The writing is humorous and engaging, and the illustrations are bold, relying on the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue. Young children will have such a good time listening to this book that they probably won't even realize that they are being introduced to the numbers one through ten. This book is part of the "Trucktown" series created by Jon Scieszka. According to the back cover, the characters and environments were developed by "Design Garage," a group consisting of David Shannon, Loren Long, and David Gordon, and it is their names that appear on the cover and spine of the book.
