Children's LiteratureTaking almost everything but the kitchen sink, and a dog—which is only a figment of his imagination—Matthew's family packs the van and trailer, striking out on vacation. Upon arriving at the beach, the friendly little fellow meets Kalita who is busily creating sand sculptures for a contest. She has also formed a very lifelike dog from sand. Matthew is so impressed with the prize for winning—a bathtub full of ice cream—that he is immediately determined to build an outstanding, realistic, irresistible, sand castle. Trouble arises when Matthew's creation is so amazing that the judges disqualify it. All is well in the end, and Kalita even provides her new friend with a dog. This story is vintage Munsch with playful illustrations enhancing each action-filled page. Young audiences will enjoy playing sleuth and discovering a diminutive team of mischievous squirrels tucked in each page spread. 2005, Cartwheel Books/Scholastic Inc, Ages 5 to 8.
