Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Big, broad splashes of action and crude but colorful characters are Sheldon's trademarks, as he demonstrates again in a new novel probably destined to join Windmills of the Gods and Rage of Angels on the bestseller list. The backdrop for this romantic adventure story is the conflict between Basque nationalists and a repressive Spanish government in the post-Franco years. Pitted against each other in a fight to the death are charismatic Basque guerrilla leader Jaime Miro and corrupt, sadistic Colonel Acoca. When Acoca brutally sacks a convent in search of Miro, four nuns escape at the urging of Sister Lucia, who has been hiding in the cloister since taking vengeance on the men who put her Mafioso father behind bars. Beautiful Sister Graciela, tomboyish, orphaned Sister Megan and Sister Teresa, who is teetering toward a breakdown, flee into the forest with Lucia, where they are grudgingly befriended by Miro and his gang. Before crossing Spain to a rendezvous point, the group splits up to more safely evade an increasingly enraged Colonel Acoca. Lucia's predicament presents an amusing counterpoint to suspense, as Rubio, the simple peasant who accompanies her, kindly explains worldly activities to a woman who knows a great deal more than he does. Not a breath of subtlety touches these pages, but goodwill and lively subplots move the book along at a spirited pace. First serial to Cosmopolitan; Literary Guild main selection. Oct.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Sheldon:

"When I was 17, I was happy to be working in a drugstore, because I could steal enough sleeping pills to commit suicide."

"I have bi-polar syndrome and was not aware what was disturbing me until I received an Academy Award and went to see a psychiatrist."

"I have worked 7 days a week as long as I can remember. A business manager of mine gave me $25 worth of tennis lessons. I went down to my tennis court and we played once a week. I really enjoyed it. Playing with the pro one day, my teacher said to me that the money had been spent and did I want to continue. I started to say yes, then I realized that I didn't want to be out on the tennis court. I wanted to be in my office writing. That was 25 years ago and I haven't been on my tennis court since."

    Excellent

I wasn't much of a book reader until deployed overseas with the military. I picked up this book to pass the time and couldn't put it down. I literally stayed up all night until I finished it. Now I have read all of Sheldon's books and it all started with this one.

A flash of sandy colore fur dissapears as a shecat darts behind a bush. There is a sudden squeal cut off. The shecat emerges from the bush with a vole in her jaws. She quickly buries it under the crunchy fall leaves that lay scattered aimlessly on the soft ground. she prowled forard cautiously. A black bird screeched from above and alerted the forest. A book too good to drop

'The Sands of Time' by Sidney Sheldon was an adventure, in which the characters become your friends. Actually, after I was done reading the book my heart filled with sorrow. I felt like I too was in love with the idea of a man like Jamie Miro. As well as the wild and adventurous life they lead. This book wont let you put it down for a second without wondering whats happened next.

    Sands of Time

This was the first novel i read and marked the beginning of my sidney sheldon marathon. Since then i have read all his books and fallen in love with the writer . His style is just unique and amazing. I wish he could write more books, like more than 200. He is truely a professor of novel writing. The sands of Time is gripping and absorbing. The story takes you into the story. You find yourself with the characters: living, talking and moving with them. The characters are brought alive. What a writer!

    Wonderful Book

This is the first Sidney Sheldon book that I have ever read. I actually found it among some books that my mother gave me. I was so lucky to come across this book because it opened me up to the world of Sidney Sheldon books. The whole story plot is very interesting, and it shows you a little bit of history for Spain. The men and women are all very interesting to read about, and the ending is very creative!

    breathtaking

This novel is wonderful. It took me what seemed like minutes to read this wonderful story. You feel the characters in this book and you can't stop reading (which is known to happen with all Sheldon books.) Definitely a must read, no doubt about it!
