When you've done as many trips into the Southwest as Roberts has, you might be looking for a different way to approach it. This is a story of 3 friends and a extended hike in a extreme region of the country. You're going to get lots of history of the Anasazi and the inevitable (irresitible?) mystery of what took place here eons ago. He doesn't dwell alot with it in this book and there are other books by this author that are better for articulating that subject. He lets you hike along with them with descriptions of the land and the interplay that takes place in their group. Hiking the desert is a physical game and a mental one and their are different ways each deal with it. A good adventure read that just happens to be in and around a historical mystery.
