Overview

Its cool gulf breezes lured him from a life of danger. Its dark undercurrents threatened to destroy him.

After ten years of living life on the edge, it was hard for Doc Ford to get that addiction to danger out of his system. But spending each day watching the sun melt into Dinkins Bay and the moon rise over the mangrove trees, cooking dinner for his beautiful neighbor, and dispensing advice to the locals over a cold beer lulled him into letting his guard down.

Then Rafe Hollins appeared.

How could he refuse his old friend's request—even if it would put him back on the firing line? Even if it would change forever the life he'd built here on Sanibel Island?

From the Publisher
"Dick Hill is fully believable as he delivers the numerous Latin accents, and he really puts out the character of Ford's confidant. The story…[is] definitely worth listening to." —-AudioFile

Loved our introduction to Doc Ford!

After reading this introductory book, we have ordered all of the Doc Ford series and are nearly done reading them. Every book has a new twist but weaves in the storyline of characters beautifully.

A well written mystery book which is well thought out and constructed. The main characters are believable and likable. The book is a bit short on action, but keeps the reader engaged through its creative plots twists. I picked up the book hoping it would focus a bit more on the island lifestyle but overall not a bad book. I gave it 3 stars for my rating but if mysteries are your thing then it’s probably right up your alley and will like it better than I did.

This tale absolutely had sections that kept me riveted, but not to the point where I couldn't stop reading. Then I hit some large "dead" areas and struggled to finish it. First outings aren't always perfect, but they need to be better to get a reader new to the series hooked. I've got another Doc Ford book laying around and will give it a try, but if it is more of the same pace, I'll likely give up part way through. This just didn't connect with me - that doesn't mean others won't find it engaging and interesting throughout. There ARE plenty of fully positive reviews listed.

    Good mystery book.

Easy reading. Good characters and a bit of marine biology that's interesting. I will definitely read the next in the series.

    Definitely want to read more!

I was excited to read that White is the successor to John D. McDonald and was not disappointed with the two Doc Ford books I've read so far. Will certainly read more.

excellent start to a great series

This book was hard to put down. Lots of action, and an interesting cast of characters. You continue to learn more about the lead characters, Doc and Tomlinson, over the course book. As soon as you are done, you will be ready for the next book to see what Doc is up to next.

    Solid 1st novel

I've been a fan of White for years while he was a columnist for Outside magazine, and I was a young adventure seeker. He's smart, funny, and has a strong sense of rhythm and pacing. I'll be following the adventures of Doc Ford in the future... for sure.

    Great Characters, Great Story

After reading several of the more recent Doc Ford installments and enjoying them tremendously, I finally came accross this, the first one. It seems that RWW hit his first one out of the park. Fully developed, complex characters and a great story to boot. I love this series.

    A John D McDonald fan

Since reading all 21 of McDonald's Travis McGee series, I felt cavernous void in my reading choices. No more! Because I discovered Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford series and I'm hooked again. Thanks and keep the Doc Ford books coming.

    Doc Ford Series

This is another well written and informative book in the Doc Ford Series. I hope the author continues with more of Dinkin's Bay and Floridian characters.

    Who is this guy?

My expectations were low when I chose this book in a grocery store on Sanibel Island. I had never heard of Randy Wayne White. The choice was mostly by default, because every other book on the rack was a romance novel. What a surprise! The characters are three-dimensional, the story moves at double speed, with surprising twists peppered throughout the book. The last occurs 24 words from the end of the story. I am ordering more Randy Wayne White books today.
