Overview

Meet Doc Holiday. As a therapist he's helped everyone from the Thanksgiving Turkey, with his recurring nightmares about Pilgrims, to Cupid and his personal romance problems-he's remarkably shy for a guy with no pants! But when Saint Nick himself comes in and is diagnosed with a severe case of Santa Claustrophobia, the Doc gets the challenge of his career. Sending the big guy off to Aruba for some much-needed R and R, the Doc takes it on himself to round up the rest of the holiday gang to handle Christmas in Santa's absence.

The challenges become immediately apparent as the Easter Bunny paints all of the toys in pastels, Lincoln and Washington fight over who's in charge, Columbus insists he must sail West to go East to make the deliveries, and the April Fool manages to do everything wrong! Christmas is out of control, and it becomes clear to Doc Holiday that there's only one person who can set things right.

Holiday characters ranging from the Easter Bunny to the April Fool try to take over Christmas responsibilities so that stressed Saint Nick can take a vacation.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Simpsons writer Reiss (How Murray Saved Christmas, which Catrow also illustrated) returns with another zany holiday entry. The madcap premise is promising. Santa and all the other seasonal celebrities, from the Groundhog and Cupid to such lesser lights as Labor Day Amos, live in anonymity in a town called Stinky Cigars ("The name is so awful that folks pass right by it"). When a glum Santa needs a vacation (he's having nightmares about getting stuck in a chimney above a blazing fire), his fellow citizens step in with less-than-stellar success. The rhymes may not be as clever or as tight as those in the previous book, but there's some goofy fun to be had. Ages 3-up. (Sept.)
From The Critics
Gr 2-5-Therapist Doc Holiday of the village of Stinky Cigars receives a new patient. Seems Santa has "Claustrophobia" because (as Doc says) "Chimneys are thinner and your thighs are thickening./All those cookies and milk/have gone straight to your rear-." The doc prescribes a stress-relief vacation while the other personified holiday celebs (The Groundhog, Cupid, Saint Pat, Uncle Sam, etc.) try unsuccessfully to pinch-hit. In the nick of time Santa returns ("I just had to show off my abs and my tan"). Zany cartoon illustrations and a wacky high-energy text will grab older kids (and grown-ups) ready for parody.-S. P. Hilarity for all ages!

I originally bought this as a gift for my neice. After reading it I decided I needed a copy for my own collection. My brother and sister-in-law loved the book too and we've been searching for more from the author. The illustrator is great! The reading of Santa Claustrophobia is a new Christmas tradition at our house.

    Fabulously Entertaining

We all love this book. I started reading it to my 22 month old last year and he still loves it this year. My husband and I really enjoy it as well. The book has such rhythm that it keeps their interest. Since we have loved this book, I bought two more for Christmas gifts. David Catrow is my favorite illistrator.

A must for adults who stress during the holidays

A delightful book to be shared with co workers and family when the stress of the holidays is too much.. take a moment and read this book aloud. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and the text is witty. This is a must for gift giving to everyone on your list.
