Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Dailey (Searching for Santa) pens a throwback western romance for her annual holiday offering. During a photo shoot on a Texas ranch, fashion model Diana Palmer is so entranced by sexy cowboy Lije Masters that within days she decides to give up her life and career to marry him. The whirlwind love affair is slowed by long cerebral conversations about their life histories, making supposedly cautious Diana's sudden decision seem ditzy and reducing the reader's sympathy for her difficult transition from career girl to rancher housewife. When Lije catches Diana with another man, Lije's stereotypical Native American sidekick, Jim Two Pony, brings words of wisdom that persuade the couple to reconcile. The predictable Christmastime conclusion is cute, but modern readers will find Dailey's very old-fashioned tinsel a little tarnished. (Oct.)

A Dallas-bred model and a rodeo cowboy from New Mexico have classic but serious issues to work out after their hasty marriage in a holiday-tinged rewrite of Dailey's Land of Enchantment, first published in 1976 as part of her Americana series. In recent years, Dailey has updated a number of titles in this series for the holiday market.

I'm positive that this is a re-release of Land of Enchantment, originally released in the mid 1970's. I thoroughly enjoyed this book when I first read it many years ago. If I had to rate the book then I would give it 4 out of 5. Reading the book now, after 20+ years I'd give it a 3 out of 5. Some aspects of the story just haven't stood the test of time, especially as I can't see anywhere on the BN page for Santa in a Stetson that indicates that it is the re-release of an earlier Harlequin/Mills & Boon book.

When you read the back of the book, you expect Lije Master to meet Diana when he brings her a Christmas Tree and to be offered a cup of cocoa. Well the only christmas trees were the one in an advertisement and the one the town gave them. Diana never offered him anything to drink except a whiskey. the story was choppy with poor editing. Confused.

On a Texas ranch, model Diana Mills and cowboy Elijah "Lije" Masters meet during a shoot there. They are attracted to one another, but seem worlds apart. Yet they fall in love and marry. The newlyweds go to live on his New Mexico ranch. However, Diana is stunned by the isolation after several years working runways in big city shows. There is no one for miles except Lije and his friend Jim Two Pony who seems to censure the new wife as not belonging here. Although not enchanted by the land, she decides to give her marriage until Christmas to work or else she leaves for the lights. Lije is over the top with rage when he spots Diana with another man; Jim Two Pony intercedes with wisdom. This throwback to a gentler writing style is fun to follow although the path to happiness is straight and narrow. Fans of the author and anyone who relishes a sweet sensuous story starring two likable protagonists and a stereotype Native American sage will want to read Janet Dailey's latest Christmas offering even though there is not a Calder for miles.
