Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Santa doubters abound, but few are as activist as Alfie F. Snorklepuss. From the moment he rips his younger sister's stocking from the mantel, he's on a one-man mission to debunk the "fairy tale" of Santa and all that it entails. But this Scrooge-in-training receives a most fantastic come-uppance in the form of a Christmas Eve visit from "the Jolly Old Elf himself." The Smiths' boisterous text and Bjorkman's (Seeds) energetic, cartoonish paintings make readers privy to explanations of the "elf science and technology" that gives Christmas its magic. Ages 4-up. (Sept.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Alfie F. Snorklepuss is sure there is no such thing as Santa Claus. He goes to the library to do his research and concludes that on one could deliver all those presents in one night. Alfie tells everyone: from the kids at school, to a television audience. His little sister tells him, "Santa Claus believes in people who believe in him." When she writes her letter to Santa she asks for a "nicer big brother." On Christmas eve Alfie gets quite a surprise when Santa comes down his chimney. Snappy dialogue makes this well-paced imaginative tale a delight to read aloud. The humor and exaggeration in the cartoon style illustrations are a perfect match for the story. The expressive faces present a broad range of feelings. Little sisters will cheer. The Christmas message—that there are some things we should believe even if we cannot logically explain them—comes through in a wonderful, playful way.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-After extensive research, Scrooge-like Alfie F. Snorklepuss tries to prove to his sister and the world that "There's no such thing as Santa Claus." However, on Christmas Eve, Santa whisks the boy off to his North Pole workshop where all is revealed, and Alfie returns home on Christmas Day a believer as well as a nicer brother. Children will relate to Noelle's feelings when her brother tries to discourage her belief in Santa, and cheer when he is proven wrong. However, Alfie's saying that he will be "a nicer big brother" at the end of the story seems overstated and a bit preachy, and there are also some confusing moments when scenes are not adequately described. Whimsical and expressive brush-and-ink color cartoon illustrations capture great emotion in the characters' faces and body language. Bjorkman's inclusion of details such as a laptop computer brings this story into the modern age, yet retains the old-fashioned sentiment. An additional read-aloud for storytime, sharing at bedtime, or independent reading.-Maureen Wade, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Alfie F. Snorklepuss is a sourpuss of a boy who doesn't believe in Santa Claus. In his overbearing way, he tries to use logic to convince everyone that Santa is a myth, but his little sister Noelle remains a faithful believer. Her one Christmas wish in her letter to Santa is for a nicer big brother. When Alfie stays awake on Christmas Eve, Santa arrives and whisks the nonbeliever off to the North Pole for a transformative experience with his elves. On Christmas morning, a gift-wrapped and chastened Alfie is inside Noelle's huge package under the tree, fulfilling her Christmas wish with his solemn pledge to be a nicer brother. The final page shows Santa adding Alfie's name to his "nice" list, right under his sister's name. Kids will be drawn to Bjorkman's loose watercolor-and-ink illustrations, which bring additional humor to the plot and add believability to Alfie's change of heart through his facial expressions. The transformation of a nonbeliever on Christmas Eve is an old story, but Alfie F. Snorklepuss is a newly minted winner. (Picture book. 4-8)

    You Better Watch Out!

Alfie F. Snorkelpuss doesn't believe in Santa, and he sets out to prove that Santa doesn't exist. He researches, weighs the evidence, and wages a campaign. No one listens, especially his little sister, Noelle. On Chistmas Eve, Noelle writes a letter to Santa Claus. She wants a nicer big brother. When Santa pops down the chimney, Alfie is face-to-face with the jolly old soul himself. Santa wastes no time explaining 'elf science and technology' to Alfie, and then stuffs Alfie into his bag so Alfie can see for himself. Santa makes a believer out of Alfie and Noelle has a very Merry Christmas. This delightful book written by Cynthia and Greg Leitich Smith and illustrated by Steve Bjorkman is a must-have for your Christmas collection! SANTA KNOWS is an imaginative tale that explains once and for all how Santa gets so much accomplished in just one night.
