Overview

Santa Claus is going to town! Marrying the magic of Scanimation with the universally beloved figure of Santa Claus, Santa! is a holiday book unlike any other.

It presents a Santa that readers have never seen before—acrobatic, playful, a little mischievous, filled with joyful energy. Here’s Santa hula-hooping. Santa juggling. Santa doing cartwheels and Santa on a unicycle. Children, as they did with Gallop!, will want to imitate Santa’s irresistibly happy motions. The grown-ups will be unable to stop smiling—it’s hard to imagine a cooler character than this jolly St. Nick as he runs, spins, gyrates, backflips, and blows big bubbles.

Scanimation is the technology behind the instant New York Times best-selling series that started with Gallop!, to most recently The Wizard of Oz. Author and inventor Rufus Butler Seder continues to refine the Scanimations, with ever more smooth-flowing and detailed moving images—perfectly applied, in this case, to the irresistible figure of Santa Claus.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The technology used in this book, Scanimation, has the images moving. In this title, it is a cavorting Santa Claus, who is a rather stout figure in his red suit and white flowing beard. Santa is really having fun. He opens by spinning a hula hoop around his rather rotund middle. Then he cavorts on a unicycle and next juggles several red and white striped candy canes. Wherever this Santa is, it must be cold because he is twirling on his ice skates and even does a backflip. Who would have thought that this big guy would be so agile. Next we meet the reindeer and Santa gives Rudolph a smooch, then he grabs his green sack of presents that he must somehow get in the sleigh because the next scene shows him cartwheeling through the snow. It all ends with a hearty "Merry Christmas everyone!" while Santa blows a big bubble out of his pipe. The technology will amuse young and old, but the story is hardly memorable. In the fourth entry in his Scanimation series, Seder demonstrates what Santa can do with a little Christmas magic up his fur-trimmed sleeve. The cover has a round die cut with an illustration showing Santa with a hula hoop around his waist. As soon as the glittery white cover is opened, Santa swings into action, twisting that hoop around his portly waist behind an acetate overlay of thin black-and-white stripes. This gives the effect of an animated inset, achieved by technology similar to a flip book but concentrated in a small window. A simple, rhyming text describes Santa's actions as he juggles candy canes, twirls around on ice skates, does a back flip and a cartwheel, and kisses Rudolph on the nose. The final illustration shows Santa with his pipe, blowing a huge bubble that magically spells out "Merry Christmas." The illustrations are a little dark due to the striped overlays, but the novelty is both mystifying and undeniably mesmerizing. This is a book that will interest everyone around the Christmas tree, from toddlers who use board books to older kids who will want to know how the moving pictures work. A gimmick…but one with a lot of bang for the buck. (Picture book. All ages)

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Santa dances, runs, and twirls throughout this darling book! As you move the pages back and forth the pictures move. You will see Santa hula-hoop, ride a unicycle, juggle candy canes and more. Red and green checkered boarders makes this a very fun book for the holidays. Once you pick this book up you will be AMAZED! It is SO ADDICTING to make the pictures move!
