PreS-Gr 3A slight variation on the old falling-out-of-Santa's-sleigh idea. This time, however, animals are sneaking onto his sleigh. At the North Pole, a tiny reindeer climbs aboard and is soon joined by a polar bear from the Arctic, a panda from China, a kangaroo from Australia, and so on until the sleigh is heavier than when Santa started. It takes until the end of the journey for him to realize what's going on. He's a jovial, if not-too-bright character who uses phrases like "Christmas crackers!" and "jumping jingle bells!" Youngsters are sure to giggle as the wool is pulled over his eyes and more and more stowaways hunker down behind the presents, enjoying their trip around the world. Soft watercolor illustrations, with light blues dominating the palette, effectively portray both the animals and the places where they live, all the while giving them a sprinkling of individuality.
