Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
One snack too many lands Santa in a tight spot-literally. During his appointed gift-giving rounds on Christmas Eve, Santa can't resist nibbling the numerous treats and sweets the children leave out for him. But the goodies take a toll on his waistline, leaving jolly St. Nick wedged, unable to whisk himself back up a chimney. Luckily he receives a helping paw (and a few hooves). This playful package of rhyming verse and humorous acrylic-and-colored-pencil vignettes will likely get the giggles going. Ages 3-up. (Sept.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Have you ever wondered about all those glasses of milk and cookies left out for Santa. Surely if he ate them all he would have a BIG problem. Well, Rhonda Greene tells the tale of a Santa who just couldn't resist all those delicious goodies and as a result, he couldn't get back up the chimney. Santa was indeed stuck. The dog tries pushing, the reindeer try pulling. They just don't seem to be able to do the job. Then the cat and her kittens come to help and finally a tiny little mouse. Unlike similar tales, like the Enormous Turnip, this mouse has a brilliant idea. His solution is ingenious and should bring a few laughs. Henry Cole brings plenty of humor with his illustrations, from Santa's big fat rear to the expressions on the faces of the dog, reindeer, cats, and our clever little mouse. Fun for all and a delightful holiday treat. 2004, Dutton, Ages 4 to 8.

PreS-Gr 2-When Santa eats so many sweet treats that he can't get back up the chimney, a family cat and dog and all the reindeer push and pull, to no avail. Finally, a mouse with a toy bulldozer provides the power needed to release St. Nick from his tight squeeze. Told in a rhyming text with lively cartoon illustrations in bright, bold colors, this is an adequate addition for libraries with readers who have an insatiable appetite for holiday books.-V. W.
