Set in England of WWII a Regent's Park family is slowly disintregated by the changes imposed by London bombing, war stress, deaths, society changes and their own personalities. The 4 children are impacted differently but the plot tends to highlight certian stereotypical responses to stress in childhood. The adults while seeming to represent stereotypes still seem well developed and can elicit a reader response of likability or dislike. This book was the selection for June 2013 at my book club, we read only female authors and selections that illustrate women's lives/challenges/time periods. This book has numerous women characters reacting/responding to the war time period. These Persephone Classics Series are well made books and tend to be unique books from a certian time period. This author is well known for her young people novels that also feature young girls making choices. Based on this adult novel I have read a couple of her youth books.
