By popular demand - An extended and stand alone version of the young adult/coming of age story, from the second part of the acclaimed novel 'The Universe Doesn't Do Second Chances'

It's the late nineteen eighties and thirteen year old Liam and his family have just moved to the climatic sunshine paradise island of Cyprus.

On his first day at school he becomes completely spellbound by the pretty tomboy Sarah. Though not only because of her cute and athletic good looks. But also because of her rough and tough, jagged edged ways and her no nonsense approach to handling school bully Michael.

This incident triggers off a series of exciting and dramatic events that brings the homely, well rounded Liam and the troubled young Sarah's worlds colliding together. The two then begin an unusual and exciting yet somewhat tragic friendship, which will stay with them for the rest of their lives, as they both battle to confront their inner most fears and demons.

From the mystery of Sarah's Mother's disappearance to the trials and tribulations of growing up on the move with army parents. Sarah's domestic abuse issues living in a broken home with her alcoholic father to dealing with Liam's school bullying from the borderline psychotic Michael. There are Summertime adventures to be had, gorgeous Cypriot beaches and bondoo valley wastelands to explore. To haunted houses, dark hidden caves and first teen romances. All the while dealing with that delicate yet rough transition into becoming a teenager.

But how long can these summertime adventures last when children are forced to grow up so fast in an ever changing world, especially when unforeseen tragedies are just around the corner...

Sarah Smiles is an adventurous, romantic tale for all adults, and young adults alike to enjoy.

    Enjoyable

When I saw this book had more then 400 pages, I was delighted. So many books on the free list turn out to be short or flash stories. Many of those are not very good. This book was very good. If I understand correctly, this is the author's second book. I am going to try to obtain a copy of the other one. This is a coming of age story about a young, tween boy, whose father is in the british military. The family moves quite often, sometimes to exotic locales. The boy is tired of moving and being the new kid, he would like a normal life like the town kids. In this book, on the first day of school, he meets a bully, has to share books with him, and finds the bully terrorizes the entire school, neighborhood and army base. He also meets his first love. The young lady has a lot to teach him about love, laughter, getting on the world and showing compassion. She also has bigger problems, than the boy ever dreamed of having. Together the two friends face their terrors, protect each other, learn they live in an imperfect world and how to overcome obstacles. Any age group from ten to a hundred could read this book and enjoy it. I would have rated this book five stars, but the editing was not the best. Soda and juice refered to the same item and has me a little confused. I do not know if this normal for that part of the world or an error. I tried to find out on the internet, but drew a blank. An awful lot of the mistakes were words that sound the same but have different meanings such as bate, instead of bait and aloud instead of allowed. Bye meaning goodbye was aways by. This just a few examples. There were many others. There were a lot of left out and added words to sentences and the punctuation was not the best either. Spell check would not have caught a lot of these errors as the words were spelled corrrectly. As I tell my students, reread your work, when you think you are done, or have a friend check it for you and return the favor. Authors should do the same. All in all this was a delightful book.

    Excellent

Well written tale, suitable for adult or teen. Great characters. Good flow of the storyline.

Could use some editing to fix spelling and grammar but still an excellent read.

In many ways this book felt like reading about about an idealize

In many ways this book felt like reading about about an idealized version of my own childhood. I had the misfortune to run into two boys much like the character of Michael, and one character similar to, but not nearly as nice as Sarah. I think the author did a very nice job of creating his characters and situations, so much so that it drew my in completely. It was only after I finished reading the book that I realized that I was consistently picturing them as several years older, approximately 14, rather than the 11-12 he suggests. Overall, I think this is a novel very worth reading, especially for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, or just wondered what it feels like.
