Sarah Vaughan: Finest Hour

Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
What can you say about Sarah Vaughan that would convey the heights of her artistry? For five decades she represented the best in inventive jazz singing: a bop innovator as highly respected in her field as Charlie Parker was in his, and a popular singer as well regarded as Frank Sinatra. Much of her most significant work was done in the 1950s and '60s, and fine examples of that period are covered on this set. Vaughan often worked with tremendous talent who were worthy of her; at times she's joined by trumpeter Clifford Brown ("I'm Glad There Is You"), drummer Roy Haynes ("Lover Man"), alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley ("How High the Moon"), vocalist Billy Eckstine ...

Vaughan's jazz-oriented material predominates, but there's also room here for pop hits "Misty" and, of course, "Broken Hearted Melody."
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Verve's Finest Hour collection of Sarah Vaughan's work compiles 60 minutes of career highlights, including "Misty," "Lush Life," "Lullaby of Birdland," "Star Dust," and "My Coloring Book." Though it's by no means a definitive compilation of Vaughan's music, it does provide a welcome overview of some of her best pop and jazz moments.

    What a voice

She has probably the best voice ever from a female artist, and it shows on this CD.
