Overview

Sarah loves the willow tree behind her house. But one day, two men come and paint a white cross on the willow's trunk, and the next day when Sarah comes home from school she finds that her beloved tree has been cut down. Sarah is heartbroken, and she worries about the little tree spirit that she met in a dream. Where will it live now? Sarah's father has an idea. It will not bring back Sarah's willow, but it holds out hope for the future. Maja Dusikova's beautiful paintings illustrate this simple story of loss and renewal.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Sarah mourns when her favorite tree is chopped down, takes a cutting with her father's help, and then engages a friend to help her watch the sapling grow. Dus'kov offers gentle-toned watercolors of affectionate scenes; the felled tree spread is especially effective. However, the text takes an awkward turn into a dream sequence with a message from a "tree spirit" (Casper with wisps of hair) that is simply odd. This spirit resurfaces later, resulting in a confusing ending.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
