Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A first novel, Rutherfurd's sweeping saga of the area surrounding Stonehenge and Salisbury, England, covers 10,000 years and includes many generations of five families. Each family has one or more characteristic types who appear in successive centuries: the round-headed balding man who is good with his hands; the blue-eyed blonde woman who insists on having her independence; the dark, narrow-faced fisher of river waters and secrets. Their fortunes rise and fall both economically and politically, but the land triumphs over the passage of time and the ravages of humans. Rutherfurd has told the story of the land he was born in and has told it well. The verbosity of a Michener is missing, but all the other elements are present, from geology and archaeology to a rich story of human life. Highly recommended. BOMC alternate. Andrea Lee Shuey, Dallas P.L.
School Library Journal
YA This sprawling novel follows the fortunes and losses of five families from the Stone Age through the present time. Each of the families can be identified through genetic characteristics handed down through the agesnot simply physical characteristics, but attitudes and morals, too. There is plenty of action to keep readers motivated to finish the book. Rutherford has a style and energy all his own that should appeal to young readers of historical fiction. This book will be a hit with young adults who have the time and attention for longer works. Mary A. Williams, Harris County Public Library

This story of several key families played out through several generations, is intertwined with real history, geography and facinating drama.Incredible, masterful writing from an intelligent and knowlegable research Author who has great vision.A veritable literary 'feast'.I identified with every character, saw every scene, smelled every odor, and experienced every emotion. A large volume that always turns out to be not large enough! As a British person I now know more about my Nation than before.I have read everything that Edward Rutherfurd has written to date. Informative, entertaining and satisfying.. a perfect combination in a book. SARUM has a proud place in my permanent library....

This book is one of the best historical fiction books I have read. It is well written, engrossing and informative. I loved how the characters were well-developed and set among the backdrop of an ever-changing town. A definite must read if you love historical fiction!

This was my first Edward Rutherfurd novel. I'd never heard of this novelist before I chose Sarum. The reason I selected this book was the subject matter. That being both the location of the title and the genre of the writing. I like historic novels because the reader gets fictional characters, events & locations, as well as real characters, events and locations. I suppose all HNs are made of the same type ingredients. That being said, not all Historic Novels are made with this level of writing, wording, researching and entertainment mix with just the right amount of each. Actually, at the time I read Sarum I was somewhat of a novice at the category considered historic novels , but at the time of this review, I've read five more of Mr. Rutherfurd's novels, with several more on the bookshelf. I've both learned from and enjoyed all. I've also little experience writing book reviews. So while my form, verbage and knowledge of the finer aspects of Book Critiquing is limited, I do know when I like and entend to continue reading the right writer for myself.

This was my second reading (and purchase) of "Sarum". The writer's technique is to tell the history as a story about how a family or group of people is living through the various events in a given place. In this case it is Sarum, or Salisbury Plain, which is the locale. There is a similar book called "London" and another called "The Forest" which have different takes on English history.

The first Edward Rutherfurd novel I read and to date my all-time favorite. I love the way he starts at the beginning and goes through history with his characters holding on to their family traits. One family had extremely long toes and it lasted for around 800 or more years. All his books hold my attention and some I just can't put down. London and The Forest were two others like that. Can't wait for Paris to come out.

Rutherford does it again! His fictional tales that weave their way through English history are captivating! I love all of his books and can't wait to read them all. If you love history and stories full of emotion and intrique you will love Sarum!

Sarum is meticulously researched and the author has portrayed it in a way that it complements the story (not an easy thing to do). He's also a brillant author, being able to create novellas (essentially) that each have their own plots and cast of characters, while still having an overall theme.

This novel is one of the major historic works of the past fifty years. Although Rutherford's method may not be unique he has mastered the technique we are more familar with from James A Michener. This is a first novel and traces the history of Salisbury in Wiltshire, England. Starting with the people who were driven south during the ice age and continueing through via Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Norman to modern day. The story is woven around a handful of families.

After thoroughly enjoying Paris, by the same author, I had big expectations for Sarum. although the history flows well, for the most part the characters are uninvolving, predictable and the legthy passages can get trully boring.

Very good read if you are into historical fiction. Only issues I have with the e-book is that the family tree(s) are hard to enlarge and review properly. Also, I find that on occasion, the author tends to delve into minutiae that is not particularly relevant or interesting. But overall, I would recommend to any person into history.

Just seem really mundane are just didn't hold my interest. I stop around page 560 because it just wasn't going anywhere. some parts were interesting but a lot wasn't.

This book tells the story of England from the prehistoric era nearly to the present through the lens of a few specific families. Facts and details of history are cleverly woven with fiction to move you through time. Many of the characters are likable and interesting and you meet many generations. It is interesting to see how the fate or destiny of a family changes completely over time, and how the past for any family it eventually lost to time. Nothing gets remembered forever despite the effort. It really makes you wonder about your own families past. What secrets and surprises lie in your heritage? You will learn a great deal about England. If you are a fan of historical fiction, or just an Anglophile, you will love this book. I look forward to reading his other books about London and other regions of the world. Michael Travis Jasper, author of the novel, "To Be Chosen"

This was recomended by my neighbor Kevin. Excellent read, good story lines with depth, Rutherford bring his characters to life, in novel ways.

I enjoyed the historical and cultural details incorporated into this novel, and the indirect continuity perfectly portrays the reality of human societal progression. If you are historically and archaeologically inclined you will certainly love this novel, however it is not for those who are looking for an alternative to their next Star Trek novel. Piper

This book was a joy to read. It not only explains the core of england's life as we know today but it takes you through the ages. It is really exciting, I couldn't put the book down. I must say that London is another fabulous book by the same author. If you haven't read them be sure to get a copy of both as I know you will really enjoy. Delightful in its depth of research.

First book in a long time I had trouble putting down. Given to me by friends right after we had toured Stonehenge and I had raved about the visit. I intend on reading all of Rutherfords works.
