Sassafras is a charming picture book that tells the story of a little skunk who feels ashamed of his "smelly-old, stinky-old, funky-old" self. But as he plays with his many woodland friends—each special and unique—Sassafras discovers he, too, has a rare and special gift all his own.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Donna Freedman
Sassafras suffers from an extreme attack of adorableness. It's set in a happy little anthropomorphic kingdom where natural enemies (fox and squirrel, owl and rabbit) frolic together. The message- "We are who we're meant to be"-is couched in uninspired, overly precious text that condescends to children. In her woodland scenes, illustrator Harper is a bit too fond of the color purple-it shows up in the water, sky, trees and even the skunk's fur.
