Overview

A Biblical Look at Satan--and How to Counter His Influence

Pastor and teacher Dennis McCallum clarifies what the Bible teaches about Satan, evil spirits, demonic control, and spiritual warfare--and how it applies today. McCallum covers all the key topics, including:

Who is Satan? Where did he come from? Why is he still on the loose?
How do evil forces operate against individuals? Against churches?
What steps should we take to resist temptation and other attacks?
How can we keep our focus on Christ, not Satan?

Comprehensive, reliable, and balanced, this book avoids extremism and sensationalism, making it the ideal resource for pastors, layleaders, and any Christian wanting to know more about the work of evil in the world.

"Not since C. S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters have we had as convincing a presentation that Satan's favorite method of relating to modern people is to convince them he is not real, thereby giving him freedom to operate amongst the unsuspecting. Highly recommended." --Dr. Ben Witherington, III, Asbury Theological Seminary

"Drawing upon solid biblical support, careful reasoning, and extensive experience, Dennis McCallum has developed an important tool from which all Christians can greatly benefit." --R. Scott Smith, PhD, Biola University

Dennis McCallum is the author of several books, including The Death of Truth and Organic Disciplemaking. The founder and lead pastor of the 5,000-member Xenos Christian Fellowship in Columbus, Ohio, he is also a well-respected teacher and leads a college ministry. Dennis and his wife, Holly, have three adult children, each active in ministry.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

The Reverend Rodriguez (pres., Natl. Hispanic Christian Leadership Conf.) shot to prominence recently, having participated in President Obama's inaugural worship service. In his latest book, as he shrewdly remarks, he attempts to steer a middle course between Rick Warren and Joel Osteen. The "path" he has in mind is strewn with obstacles that make believers stronger, preparing them for God's wonders; his is perhaps the least dubious of the gospels of prosperity, and his book should find a wide readership.

Willard (Sch. of Philosophy, Univ. of Southern California; Divine Conspiracy) urges us to embrace Christian belief as a form of reliable knowledge and to use it to engage the world and other forms of knowledge, including science. His assertions, and his flaccid style here, however, do not make his case, although those who've enjoyed his previous books will want to read this one as well.

In an era that increasingly eschews devils and hells, Xenos Christian Fellowship founder and pastor McCallum provides a startling glimpse of Christianities past. He views this life as a field of spiritual warfare, with satanic temptations particular to the Christian and the pastor, and he seasons his book heavily with scriptural references. His best advice, however, is to resist and think on God. For larger collections.

A very down-to-earth look at Satan and Demons

While reading this book I increasingly became aware of the role Satan has been playing in my life: the lies he tells me that I buy into, the discouraging thoughts I have when he proposes that I ought to be prideful and think of myself, and the worries I have at those times he has convinced me to not trust God.

This book revealed this and so much more to me! This book will prepare you for a life lived for God. It will prepare you for the war between God and Satan, Angels and Demons, people and sin, truth and lies. Praise God for this book, a focused study on Satan and how he matters to you.

    Satan is Surprisingly Relevant!

I never thought of myself as very interested in Satan, so I was surprised when I couldn't put this book down! Satan and His Kingdom provides an accessible and biblical view of God's enemy. I used to be too intimidated to consider Satan and his role in my life. This material is practically applicable and should be read by every Christian believer! It's not at all corny or irrelevantly academic. Perfect for a a small group or church class.

Must read dispels the romance and mythology surrounding Satan

Satan and His Kingdom by David McCallum is a hard-hitting look at the prince of this world. McCallum sticks strictly to Scripture to explain just who Satan aka the devil aka the accuser, etc, etc is. Lucifer is a title not actually appropriate for him as it is from a misinterpreted piece of the book of Isaiah. By breaking down every biblical reference to Satan, he delves deeply into exactly what his role is and what his actual abilities are. He shatters some illusions (sorry folks, but there's no pointy tail or pitchfork), but really tries to keep the focus on the damage Satan inflicts by allowing people of the Western world to think that he is just a myth. While McCallum does try to keep his focus on Scripture, I think that by ignoring Satan's portrayal in historical literature and pop culture, the book isn't as interesting as it could be. If he had chosen to refute each error point by point, it would make for a more enjoyable read. The book's ending is a bit of a disappointment, it doesn't conclude so much as just fizzle out with some unnecessary appendices. It's still a must read to dispel the illusions that have grown up around the devil.

    Satan and His Kingdom

As Christians, the most important part of our daily walk is getting closer to Jesus. But it is also important to know more about Satan, the one who wants to keep us from having that relationship with our Savior. It is important to know who he is, how he works, and all his tricks. Satan and His Kingdom is just the book to help Christians learn more about the enemy and understand how he operates.

Many people don't like to hear about Satan, the subject makes them uncomfortable, but the Bible is full of references to the evil one. Satan and His Kingdom does a really good job of pulling verses of scripture into the text to really illustrate the Godly basis of understanding who Satan is. This book is very readable and easy to follow. There is a lot of practical, useful information that can help each of us recognize Satan's traps, protect ourselves and avoid sin.
I think my favorite chapter of this book would have to be Satan's Power Moves (Chapter 17). I say that because this chapter focuses on the occult. Before I became a Christian, I always thought the occult was just an innocent hobby. I was never interested in the occult, but I know a lot of people are these days. This chapter tells us, again citing multiple verses of scripture, just how dangerous the occult is. Like the author says, "Satan most often prefers to work in stealthy ways." That is so very true.

There was one part that made me raise a skeptical eyebrow. The author states that Satan is capable of moving objects and causing electronic malfunctions. That just sounds a little strange to me and I have a hard time believing it. But, I am willing to give the author the benefit of the doubt since he is much more of an expert than I will ever be.

Our God is a very loving God and I highly recommend Satan and His Kingdom to help you understand the one who wants to come between you and God.
